  • So my Giirl Friend gave me 1k$ to build some speakers ... options and opinions wanted

    Greeting fellow speaker enthusiast !

As the heading of this states ... I have 1k to use on a pair of speakers that will be used as the main (front) speakers of a 5.1 system. My only problem (so far) is that I must work within some space constraints to achieve audio nirvana ! The speakers can be as tall as needed however , the depth and wideness have to remain within set points. The speakers can be no wider than 10 inches and no deeper than 17 inches. I have tried to model some using various software but, due to the width of the cabinets. the curves get a little goofy. My hope is to use the Dayton Audio RS180P-8 7" Reference Paper Woofer 8 Ohm as the mid range , the Dayton Audio RS180-8 7" Reference Woofer as the woofer and the Dayton Audio DC28FT-8 1-1/8" Silk Dome Truncated Tweeter to carry the high end. On the bottom of the speaker enclosure I was thinking of using two Tang Band W6-1139SIF 6-1/2" Paper Cone Subwoofer Speaker (vented) . The cabinets would have a barrier separating the subs from the 3 way. Any suggestions using different drivers or alignments are welcome . Thanks for reading and happy soldering !
My ears are not what they used to be. I blame my high performance car audio system

You are one lucky guy! Take a look at the project at the link in my signature line. You may need to chip in another couple hundred.

I think you will have money leftover.

You are bound to get 100 different responses.
You almost got your drivers right - the RS180 is a great driver when the crossover is right.
I'd suggest a RS180 MTM for your L / R speakers - and use the extra money you have left
over to get a nice subwoofer.

If you want your gf to keep YOU, don't try to design your own system, find a "proven design" that can fit into your space. If you end up using subs, then you want a 2-way for the top. If you pick a 3-way with big enough woofers (which is what a proper 3-way SHOULD have - like 8" min IMO), then you won't need the sub.

(Again, IMO) The "paper" RS line is still too new to be considered (as no one has really gotten their hands on them yet - so . . . no "proven" designs). While I like the "Silky" (-070), for $500/cab I like the RS tweeter MUCH better. I'd go with the silk dome version. It makes no sense to use a 7" mid, a 7" woofer, and a pair of 6.5" subs. No sense. "SpeakerBuilding 201" is a great book to try to absorb, whether you end up trying to roll your own or just go with a PD.

Wow, great budget. Does that include building supplies? The MDF is cheap, but if you want fancy veneer, it can be surprisingly expensive. If you have to pay someone to build your cabinets, that will be a pretty big hit.

Are you an experienced speaker designer? If not, your generous budget might be better spent on an existing design. I badly wanted to design my speakers from scratch when I started DIY, but many helpful forum members convinced me to start with a kit. After reading more and more about the design process, I realized it was much more challenging than I realized:

If you look at existing designs i'm sure you'll get people recommending stuff that meets your size needs. Zaph's Revelators fit your reqs... at just about 9" wide and 10.5" deep. I was considering building them a while ago but couldn't part with the cash at the time. They are under 1k but don't leave much room for building supplies or anything else:

ZRT 2-Way,  Zaph|Audio Revelator Tower - Parts Only - PairPrice shown is for a PAIR Madisound and Zaph Audio are pleased to bring you the Zaph Revelator Tower. The ZRT is raising the bar for easy to build high-end speaker kits. Once again, we would like to thank John Krutke for his design work and overall contribution to DIY speaker building. Full documentation of this design can be found on Zaph Audio. The ZRT is an extremely versatile premium speaker kit utilizing Scan-Speak Revelator drivers. The 2-Way configuration is designed for ported use in the Madisound MD38T tower cabinet. In addition to a ported MD38T, the ZRT 2-Way is also suitable for a sealed alignment in the Madisound MD20 cabinet. The tweeter used is the Scan-Speak “AirCirc” D3004/6600. This is the latest and most advanced release from the famous Revelator tweeter line. The mid/bass driver is the Scan-Speak 18W/8531G. This 7” slit paper cone driver is widely considered one of the best mid/bass units in existence. The combination of these drivers and Zaph’s design expertise has yielded a world-class speaker system. Two crossover options are available for the ZRT 2-Way Kit. Both options use Mundorf metal oxide resistors for the tweeter, air core inductors in parallel tweeter circuits and a XPP polypropylene capacitor in the parallel woofer circuit. The woofer and tweeter crossovers come assembled, with each mounted on their own Matrix and 149B circuit boards. This allows for bi-amp/bi-wiring if desired, and flexibility in cabinet placement. The standard crossover uses: ClarityCap CSA capacitors in series tweeter circuit, Solen Fast Cap in parallel tweeter circuit, and Solen Perfect Lay 14awg inductor in series woofer circuit. Note: Picture shows Sledgehammer Steel laminate inductor which is currently unavailable.  The upgraded crossover uses: ClarityCap CSA capacitors in series tweeter circuit, Solen Fast Cap in parallel tweeter circuit, and Goertz Copper Foil 14 AWG or 12 AWG inductor in the series woofer circuit. [Please note the older-style SA capacitors are depicted in the picture] If there is a specific combination of premium parts (Madisound stock only) that you would like to use for this crossover, please contact us by email with that parts list for a quote. The crossover parts we use are a good choice in this application and provide excellent results, but we will of course accomodate to your own taste. A ZRT 2.5 Way version is also available with an additional 18W/8531G mid/bass driver. This configuration can be done in a sealed MD38T tower cabinet, or ported in your own larger cabinet. Yes, you really don't want to spend that money and end up with a poor sounding result, or a pile of parts that never get assembled. If your goal is a 5.1 system as you say, remember the point one is a sub. Consider seeking designs with a similar or compatible center channel speaker.

A quick note, I would much rather have one 10" Titanic Mk3 sub than two 6.5" subs per cabinet, and they're on clearance for $99 right now. I've had some small driver subs, and I feel they're very limited, they can only displace so much. I'm one of those guys that I always want a little more than I have, and these Titanics have me very very happy. They require a 9.3" cutout, so it would be pushing it to get them into your cabinet, but if you could make it work I'm sure you would be happy. And the $$ between the two options is nearly identical.

I'm building the Ansonica's (by CJD) that would fit the foot print more or less. They are on the shorter side of the speaker height scale.

Linguistisch has a great thread for his build The Ecuadors. I believe the design was covered in another thread[s] and may use a known RS180 crossover (e.g. Nat P, Modula etc) for the MTM portion of the three way, but I don't see it spelled out in the build thread. Really great build thread for first-time builders. I can relate a lot to his experiences but his progress quickly out-paced my own.

Why not go for the gusto: http://speakerdesignworks.com/Statements.html

                            Kit: http://meniscusaudio.com/statements-pair-p-1338.html

The parts would be right at your limit but if you are building your own cabinets then you might be able to get away with building the statements.

I originally thought of the Statements too, but they are slightly out of his physical size limitations.
