So my Giirl Friend gave me 1k$ to build some speakers ... options and opinions wanted

Or he is chewing on the plethora of design options both mentioned and not mentioned here. Price is only one consideration. There's style, ease of build, ease of obtaining parts, not to mention ability to troll forums on weekdays :-)
Re: So my Giirl Friend gave me 1k$ to build some speakers ... options and opinions wa
I've completed a couple of speaker projects of my own design. One was a near field desktop 2.1 project for my gaming computer system. The other project was a bookshelf 2 way using Tang Band tweeters and Dayton 5 1/2" classic woofers in a vented box. My bookshelf speakers didn't turn out that well but, my 2.1 system did. I ended up giving away the bookshelf speakers to a friend in need. I've been reading all the responses and have spent nearly 5 hours (so far) following leads obtained here. I'm still undecided which speakers to build but, i am leaning towards the Dennis Murphy's ER18MTM Ribbon system. I have never worked with ribbons before and have developed a curiosity for them.
My ears are not what they used to be. I blame my high performance car audio system

take your time, it is free. it would be nice if you could go some where and listen to some ribbons. some people like them, some people hate. it is difficult to get ribbons to blend with a cone driver, you can often hear the x-over point. the thing is, when you get it right, well, I like the sound a lot.

Is that the same with AMT's? I'm wondering what high end midbass drivers wd go well with these, satori/accuton etc
Some speaker 'porn' to wet your appetite! The pic on the left has the grille sitting on top. The brass badge says "Intimates".
Ok, this has pi$$ed me off to no end for years. The word is WHET. Not wet. The former means to sharpen, the latter means to moisten. One sharpens one's appetite as one would sharpen a knife (whetstone, anyone?). "Some speaker porn to whet your appetite!"
Geesh.

PS: Nice looking speakers!
You go your way, I'll go mine. I don't care if we get there on time.

Ouch! Indeed I stand corrected. It's not a word I use very often, however.
BTW, they are not only nice looking, they are VERY nice sounding. Ask the guys who were at the NY/NJ DIY event last summer.

Warning, shameless plug...
If you want to save some time, I might be interested in selling my ER18 MTM ribbons. A lot of the guys here have seen and heard them, and if you peruse my build thread you'll see I put every effort into doing them right. They look and sound amazing. My only reason for parting w/ them is pretty much to try something new, and also because I think I might try an MTM wall mount or something like that w/ a sub. Where I use these kind of limits what I want to build for a bar, and a bookshelf MTM would cure that issue.
Last page of my build thread has pics of the finished speakers. I could ship them if you're interested but if you're not, I totally get it. I definitely enjoy the build process. Price shipped would be under your $1k target.

If you have little or no XO design knowledge and experience, your best result will be with an available proven design. Dennis Murphy knows his stuff and he knows how to properly design and voice a XO. Any of his designs will be excellent. If you can swing it, keeping the sub(s) separate from the mains can lead to better bass performance mainly because of various room "nodes" that most spaces have. Placement options can alleviate room nodes, which can be heard as boomy/tubby bass, or no/low bass drop-outs. Moving the sub around and experimenting with locations will go a long way towards having great, balanced bass. Putting the sub driver in the front main cabinets restricts you to that place. What if that location accentuates a room node? It can be done, don't get me wrong, as long as you have the right volume for the woofer and appropriate amplification. I can recommend the Statement series, as I'm the proud papa of the Monitors, which will change a person's expectations and perceptions about how good a speaker can sound and perform. Even from this jaded spent-my-whole-career-at-a-local-old-school-stereo-store individual. If you haven't seen it yet, go to this link:
DIY gives music lovers and audiophiles the ultimate power. First of all, DIY speakers use the same parts, building materials (usually), and design techniques of HiFi speakers in the 4 and 5-figure range. This means you can have that "rich" sound at a fraction of the retail cost. Second, by
Read everything under "Resources" at the right...only takes a few minutes. You probably know some of the info already, but even so, it deserves another read. If you've only experienced ribbon tweeters in the recognized name-brands, Infinity is just one example, the DIY offerings I have heard knock the crap out of the retail ones. I heard one designed by Joe D'Appolito, an MTM using Focal woofers and a Raven ribbon tweeter. Holy crap, it changed my mind about what a properly executed XO can do with a ribbon & for those that have panned ribbons. My Statement Monitors use the Fountek ribbon and friends that never liked any of the ribbon-tweeter offerings absolutely love how the Fountek is implemented and crossed. Very balanced and smooth, no harshness or any hint of ear fatigue. So it's more about the XO design and implementation than the specific radiating surface material of the driver/tweeter. In many cases, the difficult part of this process is choosing from the huge amount of excellent designs available! The ones you're interested in and maybe leaning towards, well, there's no duds at all. I've used Dennis' XO mods/upgrades in some of the retail speakers he has on his site, like the RS speakers and the perennial BR-1. In each instance, the overall SQ was improved and added the characteristics that should have been present in the first place. I can highly recommend any of Dennis' designs. If you're short on time, tools and shop space, the ones that the other forum member built would be a good choice too. Good luck and let us know how you're coming along or even if you have other ideas and/or want advice on something specific.
