Loving the new RS paper cones, here's what I'd like to do with them...

So I've been itching to build a nice set of floorstanding speakers for a while now and with the release of the new paper cone RS woofers, I think I've found my project. I'm looking at either doing an MT or MMT mated with the RS28F-4 silk dome in a tower design. The driver(s) do not need that much volume even in a ported enclosure, but I don't want to do a bookshelf speaker with stands, I'd rather do a floorstanding design, even if I don't utilize all the interior space.

My biggest hangup so far is I really want to the MMT design, but I fear the sensitivity of the 2 drivers in parallel (89 dB each) won't match well with the tweeter (88 dB). I've run some numbers in PCD7 and it doesn't look bad, I can achieve a fairly flat response but I have to add a 0.5 ohm resistor in series with the woofers which I always thought was bad. But the crossover overall looks pretty simple and achievable.

Anyway, the design is still on paper and I know the drivers are new, but I'm curious to see what folks are thinking about doing with the new paper RS speakers. This is what I'd like to do with them.

I do wish PE would stick with SPL @ 2.83 so you can easily compare sensitivities. Since the RS28F is 4 ohm, it is 91dB compared to the RS180P-8's 89dB.

Yes Brad beat me to it. The pair of RS28F tweeters I used in my RUsher project were both 91.2 dB at 2.83 volts. After baffle step loss I bet your plan of 2 x RS180P and the RS28F could work VERY nice. No need for added resistance in series with the 180's. You might even end up padding down the tweeter a smidge.

Especially if its done as a 2.5 set-up. The bottom woofer is only doing baffle step so you'd only really be dealing with one woofer performing midrange duty.

Yes ! I've been wanting to build a floor stander using the paper reference drives since they came out. (surely i'm not the only one) I hope some one works out all the "kinks" soon . My current state of skillz prevent me from venturing out on my own using these drivers. Forum gurus .. hear our pleas !

Even if you thought you had to add resistance, you'd do it with a smaller gauge inductor, right? I can't get below 55Hz with these, the largest of the RSP drivers (so far). In general, they seem to lose almost an octave of bottom end (compared to the metal cones). It's not because they're paper, it's just because of the design choices that were used for Qts and Fs. For me, a sub would be required for even just music with all the RSP drivers I've seen data on so far. Nice mids probably though, at least for the smaller ones.

Hey, maybe a 2.5 way, with the .5 woofer being the metal cone version. Kind of a hybrid, best of both worlds version.

If paper is so great, how come no one makes a paper dome tweeter?

That's because they are usually cone types. I have seen some 'felt' or hard-paper mid-domes, as well as pressed-paper larger dome woofers.

There are plenty of woven-cones out there, but they have to have a rigid binder of some sort.

The RS180P pair I have are showing a slightly higher qts of 0.37, with the fs and vas being the same as the Dayton sheet. That could bring the f3 close to 50hz and within 5Hz of the metal cone RS180.

I was poking fun, that said, A silk/paper blend might work pretty good. Kinda like the wool cones Silverflute uses.

Glad to know these should work in an MMT without sensitivity issues. I agree, the extension doesn't seem as low as other 7"ers. I can get to about 44 Hz f3 with a 40L enclosure tuned also to 44 Hz. It doesn't fall into a standard alignment though. These things only need 1 cu.ft. for a standard alignment but yield an f3 of a mere 56 Hz. Making the box bigger and tuning lower makes it sort of a mini-LLT alignment. But it's got the xmax to support it, in this case, so I'll probably shoot for that. I'm not looking for a bass heavy design anyway. I plan on building the boxes and measuring the speakers in the enclosure and designing the crossover around that. I've got some measurement gear collecting dust that I need to put to good use. But overall I still like the looks of the these drivers and the fr plots look great.

You would still Probably have to pad down the tweeters a bit after BSC.
