  • So this is what the north pole feels like?

Ok, maybe just Duluth. I know it's a lot colder here than where my wife's brother lives in Alaska, anyway. I could sure use a little of that global warming right now. Maybe the earth needs a face-lift, 'cause it appears something has definitely slipped south.....

Alright, enough whining, it's been cold before. But I'm home today because the they shut work down today due to the county issuing a state of emergency due to yesterday's blizzard. The big Jeep has new tires and I was ready to roll though.

We got 14" of snow yesterday. I went out in the afternoon and cleared a couple thousand cubic feet of snow from the driveway, but the high winds later filled a lot of it back in on me. The National Weather Service issued a Blizzard warning as the winds picked up to 40mph. They've died down now to about 25-30 mph, but since it is currently, with the sun shining, -13 deg F, the wind chill is running in the -40 to -50 range, so I don't think I want to go back out right now. It's supposed to drop to -18 tonight. Man, it's cold out there, it makes your lips, nose, and eyes, hurt when it hits you. We have at least kept our power on. South of here they lost power and had to evacuate people to a school so they could get some heat.

A lot you in the Midwest are in the same boat, so stay in and stay warm if you can.

Its not so bad.... I once hitchhiked from the keywanaw peninsula in northern Michigan down to Utica Michigan.. 550 miles in -40 weather with a 4 pound Yorkshire terrier stuffed in my jacket, and 230 miles of that was in a car with no heat. The sad part was that it took me less time that the bus that my mother took back 2 days earlier. You just have to have the right outfit for it.

it's not there yet. I worked in the Northern Temperature zone for couple of winters and it's -40C, -50C AND wind if you get unlucky. Spit and it freezes in the air.

It's a balmy -18° here. The wind has a bite to it.

Sounds like something to try tonight, under sunny skies it's -7.

Hi Jeff. I live 3 hours west of you. By Bemidji...or Burmidji. We have 52 below wind chill last night.

I lived in Duluth during the 80's and 90's and I remember the week of super cold temps in the mid 90's when the Governor shut the state down. I was a teacher in Proctor HS and we had several cases of frost bite of kids who walked to school. Kids who only wore sweat shirts and such. Stupid. I think that was the week where Tower Minnesota set the record for the continental US with a temp of 60 below(not windchill).

Here in Scandinavia we've had the warmest winter for ages, haven't seen a snowflake since last winter. As we speak it's 40F and raining, I wish we could get some of your snow...

Texas is looking better by the minute. I lived in Montana and Michigan in my youth when I was skinny and had no insulation. I remember 100 days in a row where it didn't get above zero in Montana. I could go the rest of my life without seeing snow and not regret it.

They're calling for rain but right now it's sunny and about 85 out. Paid my dues (Chicago, Milwaukee, Montreal) and got out. Highly recommended.

After plowing that stuff for 27 hours I couldn't get down my road, even with my plow truck and had to walk in.
