Don't think I could do it.
This is the first time in about 10 years that all my work is outside. I usually land a large interior job through the cold months. Not this year. I started a half million dollar addition in October. Just getting the sheeting on the roof.

That's it. That night, we went down to the art museum in Forest Park. We were dressed for the occasion too. We took some inner tubes to the hill down there. A group of about 10 of us showed up in a couple of cars. My brother drove his Olds Delta 88 that had no heat, so we had to cruise down the highway with the windows down so the windshield wouldn't freeze up. Those of us in the back seat were under a thick blanket laughing at how ridiculous this situation was.

We got to the hill frozen to the core, but ready to tackle Art Hill. Yes, that's a lake at the bottom with a 3' drop off. You have to pay attention and stop yourself at the bottom of the run. I watched someone just ride their sled off the edge, sitting down. The sled kept going, the rider had the wind knocked out of him. When we were there, no grass on the hill could be seen. It was solid packed snow.

We got there at night of course, and at the top of the hill they have a fire going, fed by things like broken sleds as well as what logs attendees brought with them. So we warmed up for a minute, and then attempted the tubes. The air inside was too warm causing them to stick to the snow. So we had to work them down the hill. It had gotten so cold that the soles of my shoes got rock hard and wouldn't grip the packed snow. By the time I climbed back up the hill in those slippery boots, my coat was unzipped, my hat was off, and I wasn't cold for the rest of our visit there.

Yes, back in the blizzard of '78 we had 6 ft of snow, and the windchill was -110, and I had to walk to school, 8 miles, and it was uphill, both ways......

Back in 1990 - 1995 I worked at FedEx at the airport sort facility come rain or shine. Even indoors it would be miserable in the peaks of winter and summer. For 2 of those years I worked on the ramp unloading aircraft. I couldn't do that today. Too old. :o

My son was complaining about the cold and snow until I showed him my pics of the 78 blizzard. hehe. not another word as we worked our way thru yesterday. of course if was all for naught this morning. I had to call off as all roads around me were closed except for emergency personnel. I did make it in for the afternoon and midnight shift. Right on lake MI it is -15 and about 50 ft up, we are getting about -70 wind chill. Looking to be a loooooookng night.

Kinda makes me miss working in the frozen foods warehouse...... -20 to -40 degrees inside, it was always nice to go outside for a smoke break when it was around 0, it felt warm.

We got about 10 inches here. 'Bout -13 here now. Expected -20 tonight.
Level one so I didn't have to work tonight. Maybe tomorrow, wife is already off for tomorrow too.

                          Later,

I remember the blizzard of 78 very well! Snowmobiles were the only thing that could make it out of our neighborhood for several days. Luckily there must have been fairly decent warning because my parents had stocked up the house very well with food and we never lost power. Just lots and lots of snow and cold. After the roads were cleared they issued everyone 6' tall fiber glass rods with orange flags to mount on your car bumper so people could see you coming around corners over the massive snow banks. That next summer all of us kids had those rods/flags mounted on the back of our bikes

Sounds like a typical MO winter.
