  • New shallow woofer design...

At the CES Unveiled event last night, Prescient Audio showed a new super-slim 12-inch woofer for use in car audio, DIY projects and the company's upcoming line of freestanding and in-wall subwoofers.

I think I just saw some patent information in the newest issue of Voice Coil on this sub...just flipped through and didn't have a chance to read it since the wife cleaned up, and now I can't find the issue.

      Looks interesting!

Very cool design. Would make for a great hide-away sub. Wonder how they model.

I've been on this board for, I dunno, like 7 years now, and every once in a while, someone comes along and says, "Why don't they just make a woofer with the voice coil going all the way around, just a dome and a surround." And here, finally, someone did it.
Isn't it about time we started answering rhetorical questions?

Very interesting. And since they state "linear excursion", I'm assuming this number has been klippel verified.

Says they're offering it in a loaded enclosure. Hopefully they'll offer the raw driver

Looks pretty neat. If it pans out I wonder how much the tech will cost initially?

                Re: New shallow woofer design...

The configuration of this driver looks like a Bang & Olufsen patent I saw recently, where a rear surround is mounted between the inner edge of a ring motor structure and the back of a dome diaphragm with a cone-shaped protrusion. However, I doubt B&O will be interested in what this guy is doing unless he attains a large market presence.

You can do lots of things with NdFeB magnets, and moving a very large voice coil is one of them, but this looks like a very expensive design to manufacture. We also saw this exhibit at CES, and the driver was not cheap.

They were designed and hopefully will be built right here in my little corner of the world.

you are indeed correct, Jason. January 2014 version of Voice Coil Mag has the patent info written up there. If I remember to when I get home, I'll post the info.

                        Re: New shallow woofer design...

I don't know much about voice coil construction, so I may demonstrate my ignorance with this question, but wouldn't that much of a voice coil tend to increase impedance quite a bit? There has to be a large amount of wire in that coil even if it's just one layer. I figure around 30" for just one wrap of wire...

Unless they had, maybe two or four separate coils wired in series/parallel etc. to control impedance?

Again, probably just showing how much I don't know.

Super-cool idea, though. With huge magnets and depth with most heavy-hitting subs, this design seems to reduce cabinet volume considerably.

Just decrease the wire gauge. The big benefit is higher power handling.

in the car audio world, shallow subs are not new. in fact, SI has a new version of theirs coming out soon. 3.4" depth, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 15mm linear excursion, IIRC.
JL Audio also has a few varieties but the 13tw5v2 is 2.625" deep and klippel verified at about 11mm. Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, Earthquake, etc, etc, all have shallow subs.

That said, this one is about 1/2" shallower than any of the others I know of and if the linear throw value is legit, that's pretty hefty.

I like shallow subs, but most have an Fs that's pretty high. As ErinH mentioned, shallows are common in the car audio world, but I've yet found one that I could use with an alignment to provide more low end extension without EQing the hell out of it in a decent/small-ish box.
Hopefully this new one will be the first to be capable of that. But then I probably couldn't afford it.
