  • Dual Opposed Sub's

I for awhile have been looking at the dual opposed sub boxes on DIYSoundGroup's website and have been giving it some thought. I was thinking about making a table from one of those boxes but the only one that has ever showed available is the 8 CF box which would be massive overkill for me.

Has anyone here ever built one of those dual opposed boxes? I am just curious as to the results you may have gotten and it it was something that dug deep and hit hard?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...

My IB is a quad of opposed mounted Tempest-X 15's. It succeeds in isolating mechanical vibration transfer to the walls, leaving just sound pressure. And holy cow can it pressurize the room. I only have 1600cu/ft in the HT space total (3000cu/ft behind the sub.)

I have dual opposed subs. I really really love the DO idea. It actually works. At first I had 2 single down firing and a dual opposed (4 drivers, 3 cabs). The DO cab was so much better I bought two more subs to make the other cabs DO, giving my 6 drivers, 3 cabs, all DO. And man what a difference. Totally inert. Clean and clear bass. I have them firing up/down like bossobass.com described. Get them near the wall and all the drivers are within an 1/8 wavelength of the wall. My listening position measurement looks nearly anechoic with a room gain taper from 30hz and down. It's insane. Anything else would be a step backwards as far as I can tell.

          CJD,
Could you draw this out please? I'm having a hard time picturing a dual opposed IB in my mind.

          thanks

Place a box with an open top into a cutout in the wall, open side first. Mount drivers to the four sides and not on the 'bottom'. They fire at each other paired, and there is no oscillation to make the wall move.

            See it now?

I was thinking of building a table with a 2.5 CU DO box and make into a coffee table. So you would have LFE literally at your feet while watching a movie. So I think I will start planning something out for this. I just need to find the right table top for the project.

That would certainly make your soda "pop" and give your coffee the "jitters" and decapitate the "head" of your beer... might even give "flight" to your buffalo wings.

Thanks Wolf, thats what I had in mind he might be doing but for some reason I was locked into the boxed version with woofers opposed and magnets facing each other which wouldn't allow IB.

Never thought about this, sounds very interesting. Obviously there isn't any issues with cancelling out waves, right?

Since it is a dual opposed box it shouldn't vibrate...

I'd be happy to set up a screening for folks. I've hosted a couple small gatherings in the past... I have a few speakers around too.

You can see half the IB manifold below the screen here.

CJD's whole home theater is quite impressive. Everything is way oversized for the room. His IB is probably the most potent subwoofer/room combos I've heard. And, I've heard quite a few. The screen size and curved will make you feel like you're in the front row at the theater.

But, I hear he has 4 18" Maelstroms looking for a home somewhere.

Keep me in the loop if you ever decide to do a Chicago GTG.
