  • New Project: The Jonquils (RS150P-8 + SB26STNC)

I am pleased to share my newest project with you guys. This is a design in progress so this initial post will not contain every single detail (i.e. I haven't measured the drivers in the final enclosures or designed the crossovers yet). As some of you may have seen in my "taking a step back" thread I am not done building/designing speakers at all... I just have to make good choices regarding my time available. That said, for this project I am using Parts Express 0.25 cubic foot Maple enclosures:

The UPS guy dropped off the enclosures, a pair of 2" flared ports, and a pair of nickle plated binding posts on Friday. I have to say that it would take me countless hours to build and finish enclosures this nice. The midbasses are the new Dayton Audio RS150P-8 paper cone drivers. The tweeters are SB Acoustics SB26STCN-C000-4.

I spent 3 hours on Saturday afternoon and 2 hours this afternoon working on these. I'll let the pictures show how far I have progressed:

    More details to follow!

Man that port looks HUGE! Looking good Craig. This will make for a very nice combo.

Very, very nice! I'm SO interested in the SQ with those drivers.
I always mar the finish on the baffle when I route them - how did you avoid that? Use contact paper on the baffle first?

Don, I just use blue painter's tape.

Chuck, yeah no kidding! They are only 2" ports but that flare is humungous!

I've got a pair of the 2" in a downfiring .68 enclosure and thought they looked big in them. The flare on yours is bigger than the woofer!

Nice! Glad you found the time.

Very nice. Seems like a nice combination of drivers. I am curious to find out what they sound like.

Here is a shot of new speaker next to my RUshers (0.5 cubic foot) for size comparison. Really doesn't look half the size.

And here is a close up of my fumble! I was carrying the baffles and accidentally drop one of them. Luckily my foot stopped it from smashing into the garage floor, but it did go skidding across the floor. Scuffed off the paint in a couple of places. I just used a black Sharpie to touch it up for now. Luckily these will be sporting grills. I hate when things like that happen.

I was also able to get both speakers fully measured this weekend. Time to start working on the crossover design.

Re: New Project: The Jonquils (RS150P-8 + SB26STNC)

The preliminary crossover design is done! I have never had a crossover design just fall into place as easily as this one did. Using my in-box measurements the simulated design in PCD has the smoothest on and off axis responses, best phase tracking, and smoothest power response of any design I've previously done. I think a few things contributed to the ease: 1) the drivers have very smooth and extended responses, 2) the tight center to center driver spacing and the small baffle dimensions, 3) I started the design with no preconceived slopes or crossover points. I let the two drivers show me where they needed to go (as Jeff said in his seminar).

Now I need to dig through my parts bins and hopefully I have the right parts to construct some prototype crossovers and start doing the voicing.
