  • "Burn n' Die" Build

Working on a new two way for the living room, something with WAF approval and would not need a subwoofer. Wanted to use one of the HiVi D-series drivers but I also considered other brands. e-speakers had a sale on the HiVi D8.8 for $75 a pair and could not pass up the deal. Using Unibox, I came up with a 40L box tuned to 32 Hz with an f3 of 28 Hz. The inside dimensions of the box are 11" X 17.25" X 15" with a 1" X 10.5-8" X 13" slot port. The hard part now was trying to find a tweeter that will work well with a true 8" woofer. Looked over the forum and came across "The Fatbelly's" using the ScanSpeak Discovery D2604 as a tweeter. After asking around about other tweeters, I still came back to the D2604, the price is right for my build, and after all the testing that Dave did, it just reassured my decision. Now for some pictures.....

Now that I had the boxes some what put together, decided to see what the wife thought and I think the woman's face on the tv explains it all.

I am going to finish this build to take to Iowa in the fall but once Dave finishes his waveguides, I have a feeling that a MLTL will be in order or I might do some mtm's with the new RS paper drivers. Look for measurements coming in the future and crossover work too.

Am I reading this correctly:"HiVi D8.8 for $75 a pair"? How did you snag a deal like that? When was this? E-Speakers does not have anything on their website like that right now.

Nice! I like your choice of parts too. When you get a minute, I'd like to see your XO's.
With a pistol, whip and chair, I'm beating my DS-135 MT's into submission. Though similar in the basics, they sound so very different from our beloved late Lou C.'s GarnetII's (which have become my "near-field" computer monitors).

I'd like to have the spare change to "design" an MTM around the new RS-180P-4's and choices of tweeters, also.

Can't tell for sure, but is that a "Mona Lisa smile"?

Yep, last fall they had them on sale, I am guessing some buyout deal.

Looking nice so far. If it's not too late, I suggest bifurcating that slot port at the bottom. I initially designed a similar slot port arrangement like that for my Blastoramas, but it didn't "look right" and I was afraid of the bottom panel warping towards the front and making it look worse, so I bifurcated it. I'm very happy with the results.

Looks like they have the D5.8 on sale right now for $69/pair

You are right, that is where the name came from. I asked the wife what I should call them and she said, "Burn and die" so that is what they will be until a proper name is decided. Who knows, maybe she will let me place them in the living room when they are completely finished.

Just paint it black. It's slimming. She won't even see it.

                        Tom,
You are going to LOVE that woofer. I was so upset when the price on them went from $90/ea to $200/ea because of the neo jump. I thought I really found a diamond in the rough. I think at $200 they are still a good driver, but not an exceptional value. I cannot believe you got them so cheap! I am looking forward to this build....I know the end result you are heading tword and it is good....very good.

The fatbellies were the result of a small 2-way usig the D5. It is taking everything I have not to get a pair of the D5's.......

Edit: I could not resist knowing thei performance.... I just bought two pair. Someone please help me!!!!!!!!!! :( but really :o nah....I'm all :D

Could you point me to measurements of the d5?

Here's the MFG data. Mine measured fairly close, however it is on my archive hard drive and do not feel like digging it out. They are more of a woofer than midbass. I crossed them to a Scan D2905/93000 at 2.5K. I would not use them too much higher.... They may be......."Underwhelming"...... ;)

I had already seen the linear response graph from swans. I guess I was hoping some more info was available. Hmm. Must resist acquiring more things...
