  • 3x5 JVC buyout speaker in a line array.

So I bought 32 of these 3 x 5' and I have to say I was really pleased with a $1.00 speaker. I've decided to put a box of drivers to use.

I choose a line array. Never built one, it's been kind of neat putting this together. The baffle was kind of a pain to cut out due to cutting 32 oval holes. It can be a jig saw blades nightmare.

The 3x5 ' s are rated at 85 db @ 1 watt per meter. Not bad when all said and done 16 are at 97 db at one watt per meter. This driver only plays to 16,000 hz. Not bad, but too give it more high end I'm going to pair it up with a Fostex Ft- 17th super tweeter. It's 98.5 db at 1 water per meter.

When mocking this up on winsid enclosure should be about 41 cu ft. That's a coffin. So I decided to go infinite baffle set up.

Was wondering how long the wings should be for the side panels. I've seen people use 48" hinges to flare out the side panels.

Does anyone know of any really good websites that talk about line arrays? Or how to tune this? Haven't seen much of a calculator on this enclosure design.

    Bart

Jim Griffin has a white paper on line arrays. Not to many people can hear above 15,000 hz so you could save your money on the supper tweeter for some woofers.

A flat baffle works best IMO as deep wings or u- frame is going to create cabinet resonances. Post the TS specs and we can model the roll off, it's probably in the 80 hz range.

That's pretty cool, you could try EDGE, I think...

Sounds like a fun project -- I will definitely be following this one. With the oval design, I'm curious why you oriented the drivers horizontally (I'm guessing height considerations?). It seems like you would get better horizontal dispersion if they were oriented vertically. Then again, with a 3x5, there may be no noticeable difference...

Thats a good question kirk. The Baffle is 73" tall 8" wide. If I stood them up. Like you said the height becomes an issue. With the drivers and the height span of the speakers. This is going to have good soundstage and imaging. This is just a trial run. I put them together like that so if I wanted to mount them in an enclosure I could. WINISD reccomands with 16 drivers I would need 2 ports that would be large, and the length would be the length of the thickness of the baffle which is 3/4. I would like to try a 10 cuft enclosure, due to height I wouldnt want them to tip over. This baffle is very lite if weight considering how many drivers there are. Birch is lighter then mdf.

          HERE ARE THE SPECS

          Specifications: *Power handling: 15 watts RMS/30 watts max *VCdia: 3/4" *Le: 0.75 mH *Impedance: 8 ohms *Re: 7.5 ohms *Frequency response: 90-16,000 Hz *Fs: 90 Hz *SPL: 85.5 dB 1W/1m *Vas: 0.13 cu. ft. *Qms: 2.88 *Qes: 1.33 *Qts: 0.89 *Xmax: 1.5 mm *Dimensions: A: 3-3/8" x 4-7/8", B: 3-1/16" x 4-1/2", C: 2".

Here's the dipole roll off of a single diver with different baffle widths. This assumes a flat driver response. The Edge program will give you a total baffle response that could be blended with a measured response.

                John,

Thats a pretty neat program there. I like this. Ill have to look over this and go back to the drawing board.

                Thanks

I wouldn't think you'd start over. Maybe add a few subtle wings and a pro woofer at the bottom, cross around 200-500 hz.

Re: 3x5 JVC buyout speaker in a line array.

After working on the wiring for one side, I forgot how fun it is to wire 16 speakers in series/Parallel. I got the other baffle cut out and staind. I'm trying to decide if I want to go infinite baffle or build an enclosure. I've built one before for 8 of these speakers and it sounded pretty good. It had good bass response and good midrange. I'm still in the experimenting stage.

I've tested the 16 out with a Dayton 15 watt t amp in the infinite baffle wasn't to pleased with the sound. I think an enclosure would fit this much better.
