I said lug around because that is what tends to happen to second speakers. If these speakers are intended to be the main ones in the lounge why the emphasis on cheap drivers?

But these are big speakers that do bass and not big monitors that do loud.

I have a growing suspicion that people below a certain age that did not grow up lusting after big monitors they could not afford may not see things in quite the same way.

Title of thread says "three way monkey coffin," not "big monitor."

I like where this is heading. For around $400 in parts plus whatever the cabinet ends up costing, I can see quite a few people building these. Including myself. It's not hard to picture them being more or less permanent speakers in man-caves, shops, big open basements, gyms, and so on. With nice veneer and a good finish they'll look great. Made from plywood and painted black, with beer bottle resistant steel grilles, they would score a perfect zero in WAF. Lots of interesting possibilities.

The budget is a good sweet spot, I think. Raise the price in search of more efficiency or whatever, and a lot of us will say, "Well if I'm going to spend a grand on speakers..."

        i love big speakers , my first project was 2.5's in a 36" x 14.5" X 14.5" cab ...

        i'll conceived 2.5's

You have picked an excellent array of drivers that should be fairly easy to work with. I have a set of series II woofs here already and may just build this myself. Plus I have a pair of pm220s to play with as well. Hmm dual 305s, pm220, waveguide loaded tweet?????

You have 4 ST305's just sitting around?

That would make a seriously rocking speaker. Those PM220's are nice but a little steep on the price for this concept.

I have a pair of st305s in 2.5 cubes tuned to 35 hz IIRC. The dual 12s with the pm220 is just a thought. Though dual 10s is a more realistic possibility.

I see. That would be a little more reasonable...but who needs reasonable.

You can use higher sensitivity mids to assist the BSC, and that will help with your goals, but not with a 300 Hz xo. Lower.

Cool speakers. Is the 2.5 a reference to 2.5 way implementation?

yes it is . though they started out life as a 3 way with off the shelf XO , i learned quickly that was not correct ...

Hmmm, I wonder if you can run the mids without a high pass. Just a thought.

                        Oops, that's a 2.5 way. Nevermind.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen 15's. But what we really wanted was 30 Hz, 92dB/W, and 8 ohms. And 15's are either high 80's that go deep in a huge box or mid 90's that only get to 40 (PA). This isn't the frist time I couldn't find 'the perfect 15' and punted to a 12. That s2 12" certainly splits the difference perfectly. These are going to end aup a lot like my first 'serious' non-PA speakers - 12" Ultimate car subs (old prototype of the current Series 2, actually), the old B11EC80 mid, and a slightly horn loaded dome tweet. Probably with a lot better crossover.... The tools we have now are better than back in the late 80s. I remember mesauring crossover responses with oscilloscopes and tweaking reverse phase nulls in by ear with a sine generator.

On your mid sensitivity you can pick up 2-3 db from the slopes of adjacent drivers and 3 db from the baffle depending on the width. I use woofer(s) minus 3 db baffle step as the lowest for the mid when I'm contemplating.

I could be wrong on this as well, but I was thinking that a little lower impedance at tweeter frequencies would be less of a problem for even more anemic home audio gear. As far as valve amps, I doubt that the average guy who would build a speaker like this would be using a valve amp, but I could be wrong. With that said, I am not attached to the tweeter. I chose it for a decent looking FR, good sensitivity, good power handling and good price but I am open to other choices for sure.
                              You are absolutely right.

So in this case the lowest sensitivity mid you would consider with our 92.5 db woofer would be 89.5 db?
