I hadn't even noticed those. The projects are kind of similar in overall concept but as Andy noted the form factor will be a fair bit different. I also think it is usually a pretty tough sell to cross an 8" midrange above 3k as that design does. I would like to have this crossover voiced in a hi-fi way...perhaps with a little bbc dip..I'm not sure about voicing choices but hope that someone here will help with the crossover simulations and then will be happy to ship it to someone for final voicing...

How will these two compare -- advantages / disadvantages?

That is super cool looking. If the FR plot from TB is for real it should be a dream for crossover work. Do they have a 5" that has a little more power handling? I mean it seems a shame to pair a mid capable of 102 db or so at it's rated power input with a woofer that can do 9 or 10 db more. Perhaps I am going wrong here with this concern...

Underhung voice coil too, should be a nice midrange.

Nothing wrong with that Faital though, specs look good.

Yeah, I know. If folks here with experience feel like an 88 or 89 db mid will be adequate then I think that opens up the field a lot. TB would have several options.

That looks like it would do a good job. Has anyone tried it out. Nice smooth response but makes me wonder a little how much smoothing is applied.

If that response is for real it would be pretty amazing. No breakup at all really. Good price too.

That is a good find. Looks like some good information there on what to do and perhaps what not to do. There was/is something of a split between a big monitor like the "Rockin it Old School" and a larger tower floor standing speaker.

sweet! I've been wondering what to do with my pair of ST305's and the pair of DX25's out of my old PI2's!
looks like a very fun build.

No criteria for sealed. My plan now is ST305 vented in 100L Fb30 (could tune lower to compensate for room gain by giving a gentle rolloff). But I'm definitely in favor of vented. The 15" drivers all just need too much volume vented or are low efficiency and 4 ohm.al

    Currently I favor

    ST305 vented
    Faital 6Fe100
    Vifa DX25

That is like $326 for drivers. Sadly the tweeter is out of stock for the next 3 weeks. However I am ready to order drivers today.

Does anyone have any major qualms with those choices? Or said more clearly, I am settled on the woofer I think but what are people's opinions on the mid and tweeter. I know the mid isn't round but I am thinking that rearmounting with a roundover will be a good workaround.

Clearly it's understood the ported system will have better bass response and power handling and can sound just as good as sealed if executed properly. With a 42" tall enclosure, there's more than enough volume for tuning.

    Yup.

I think we will end up around $425 rather than $400.

Again just an opinion, if you have to skimp on quality do so on the woofer, buy a decent mid or two

Agreed on both of your points.

Unlike some, Intertechnik is a solid DIY speaker company which invests in providing good support such as their Loudspeaker Building Magazine.

The problem is finding cheap big monitor woofers. There are plenty of cheap efficient PA woofers with no bass, plenty of cheap subwoofers with bass and no efficiency and plenty of expensive 12" woofers with the right efficiency and bass.

I suspect this is another indication that you are receiving input about different kinds of speakers.
