I just noticed the Community buyouts. They have a 15 inch subwoofer that has decent sensitivities and might dig low. No idea if they are any good though.

I would be willing to put a bit of time into this after MWAF. Let's clarify what size of monkey is really wanted. I mean, may as well go full 80s Cerwin Vega 15" style. Bigger is better right??????

Others smarter than I should comment, but to me that driver has too high a Qts at .79 and a slightly too high FS. If it had that Q but an Fs of 22 or something it might be a great choice for a sealed box. Sensitivity is average compared to the DCS305 (about equal). Mostly though I think it makes sense to use drivers that will be around for awhile if the goal is to have this be something people can build.

that sounds fine. I think a project like this should use current drivers. that way if some one would like to build them it would be possible.

I think the woofer should be 8 ohm.

The obvious choice for woofer would be either the Dayton ST or Dayton DS. The Classics and Peerless just require too much volume. Would prefer to see the DS because not a lot has been done with these yet.

The DC300 looks pretty darn good. In 75.6L with a 3"d x 4.5"l port, we get a tuning of 32.6 and f3/6/10 of 35.7/30.8/26.1. SPL is coming in at [email protected]/1m. Not a whole lot of power handling before xmax is reached, but a contender none the less.

The DS315 looks good as well. In the same enclosure, f3/6/10 is 32.3/28.9/25.4 SPL is 88.4 Xmax is exceeded with about 150w of input.

I like the STs but the price is a bit of deal killer IMO. In trying to keep with a $400 budget, half that would go to the woofs. Not a good choice IMO.

The DCS 305 does fine in 3.5 CF which will easily be available in the intended box I think. The DS likes a very small box vented it looks like based on PE calcareous. I don't have WBCD in front of me. The main problem with DCS305 is the 4 ohm impedance. I do agree the peerless needs too much box size for this project. The other suggestions don't dig quite as deep as the DCS though. Is the consensus that a 4 ohm woofer is a dealbreaker?

8 ohm is preferable for most people. We can look beyond PE offerings too.

4 ohm shouldn't really be a problem should it? With imp rise and xover additives, the 4 ohm will be minimal and any about any amp should be fine. It will also make the woofer crossover less expensive.

These showed up in the classifieds so I looked at them on the PE site, http://www.parts-express.com/peerles...ofer--264-1110 I didn't model in unibox yet, but I bet they would do good in a 3-4 cubic foot enclosure vented, given that is what you are going for.

What about a Pro woofer like the PA380? Decent enough xmax, 28Hz Fs, low Qts. Plus it's 98 dB sensitive, and less money than the DCS305.

Go big or go home, right?

Vintage speakers only had to deal with music, mostly from turntables. Do you want to duplicate that frequency response or better it? L pads on tweeter and mid? High sensitivity for good volume with 40 watts?

I want to better that FR. The Designer woofer does look pretty good but if a 4 ohm woofer isn't a deal breaker I'd take an extra 1/2 to 1/3 octave of extension. Perhaps that's too much though. I'm open.

I'm not opposed to a 15" but I think 12" is the sweet spot unless there is a 15" that would do an F3 of 35 or thereabouts in a sealed box. That might be pretty cool. I don't think any 15" with 98 db sensitivity can dig deep enough
