What else am I missing. Balancing price, usable FR and needed sensitivity is tough here. Oh, the 4 ohm RS150p or the 6" Silver flute may work.

These are described on the SB Acoustics website as OEM only and I have never seen them available to DIYers in Europe. There is some chance these OEM models will not remain available when the current batch has gone. I don't know but it might be worth finding out first before settling on such a model.

Two mids does not look right to me. Not sure you want a 10" mid but a single larger mid would get my vote on looks.

I know woofer hasn't been decided yet, but who likes a pair of these SB Acoustics mids. Price is great. Response is nice. $27 for SB Acoustics is a great price.

Don't know what causes those peaks. Difference between the two is one peaks at nearly 95 dB and extends while the other has a bump up to 90 dB. After BSC, take 4-6 dB for mids/tweeter. As I recall, Zaph had a resistor on the mids as well.

Remember too that the SB 12.3 is sealed, and it's still BIG. More box...more wood...more bracing...more finish...more money.

So I still think the SB mids would be nice, but this TB might be a pretty good option. I'm guessing 2 would still be needed.

So I'm sure there are other options out there, but I modeled quite a few woofers this evening. I looked through all of what PE has as well as Madisound and Meniscus. I limited price to $100 or less. I'll post the WBCD graphs FWIW. I've come to the conclusion that the DCS380 sealed or the DCS305 vented are the best option for this. They will both work very well in 100 to 110 liters. The 380 has a couple db more output above 40 hz and the 305 has a bit more from 30 db down. Personally I'd pick the ported 12" but the DCS380 is very appealing as well.

I do understand the concern regarding the need to keep the impedance up to reasonable levels and if that is deemed imperative then the DS315-8 woofer looks pretty good.

So, thoughts or suggestions for other woofer options I've missed?

I've no idea whether this woof will satisfy the needs for this project, but I'm using it in a couple of shop speakers with very good results. Box size: 3.8 cu. ft. , vented.

DCS315 has a similar peak but smaller. What is the origin of those peaks?

The DS315 has a 150 Hz peak that would be nice for BSC. Similar to Zaph's SB 12.3. You're right though, it does drop below that more than I would prefer. Could do a bass boost with a BFC (big cap). No, that didn't help.

I would agree with this, but would be open to others thoughts.

4 ohm shouldn't really be a problem should it? With imp rise and xover additives, the 4 ohm will be minimal and any about any amp should be fine. It will also make the woofer crossover less expensive.

2 cents worth. Lots of AVRs like a minimum of 6 ohm (nominal) impedance with not much time near 4 ohms. Just a thought. The price-point being talked about is doable for lots of beginners. 30-ish Hz matches the old 15" Cerwin-Vega 3-ways of the early '80's.

Without doubt the templates can be frustrating to do especially the first time you try them. I can do them but it takes a little bit of effort and caution to get them right no doubt.

There are obviously round frame choices available. It's just a matter of finding the right one I guess. Not that the SB is out because it seems like just the right performance and at a great price, but I'm sure there are others.

Like mark said, it can be done, just a little more effort. My thinking was more about the newer guys that don't yet have that skill.

Perhaps it would make sense for me or one of us to knock out a batch of templates that could be shared around to folks building the design but without skills to produce a template. Just a thought.

I do think it is a great driver for this aside from the non-round frame.

Just gotta make a template. More work, that's true, but once it's done they'll look awesome. I like that mid choice. A lot.

For a BIG rockin 70-80's style three way, IMO only a 15" woofer will do!

I nominate the DCS380 for efficiency, extension and affordability.

Thanks for the advice. I suspect you are correct on that.

Looks like a fun project.

I've got a big 3-way already - impedance being their weak point - with some smaller stuff more recently.

Couple things I learned that may be helpful - my boxes are 24" deep (14" wide, 50" tall,) so even when placed on wall I ended up needing almost full baffle step. What I didn't need is flat modeled response in the box tuning - even though it's sealed (dual RS270's) response into the 20's is solid.
