I mean if surface mounting would not cause strong enough diffraction problems to require treatment in the crossover then the builder could build it either flush mounted or surface mounted. Changing the z offset 8mm can't be that huge of an issue I wouldn't think. But what do I know.
It would truthfully require a test with two baffles, one flush and one surface mounted. My guess is the negative effects of surface mounting the mid would be negligible in the grand scheme of things. You would also be able to achieve a 20mm closer CTC. Whichever is chosen the design should be final. Moving driver positions post x-over design is a no no.

A bit OT but certainly in the spirit of things.

I will prob start with surface mount. A grill is a good idea. And a grill frame would likely be more of a diffraction issue than the frame of the mid.

I will definitely build this. My current garage speakers are the cult favorite DCM KX12 series 1. My favorite all around speakers ever. The tweeter has always been the weak link with the kx's. The kx's are also ported 12" 6" mid and tweet. This collaboration should be a great way to retire the DCM's.

I have been staying out of the discussion (as I am unlikely to build a monkey coffin at present), but I am going to second the surface mounting of the mid. I think traditionally the driver arrangements on monkey coffins are usually a little ugly, why break from tradition?

As for the diffraction effects, the tweeter doesn't have much of a recessed waveguide so this could actually be a problem. My solution, acoustic felt! Build the box with proud sides, experiment with felt, and create a cool full or partial bodied grill cover with some sort of tweed...now we are talking!

This should fill the bill just fine. On an output capability perspective the mid is probably the weak link here. Certainly not the tweeter...

Not a bad idea. I'm trying to remember which member here has done a lot of experimentation with felt and other surface treatments for diffraction. It might be DLR.

It is dlr. You remembered correctly.
You go your way, I'll go mine. I don't care if we get there on time.

Still addressable in the crossover no? I mean otherwise how would we get those horn tweeter/12" two way speakers working...

The Dayton PM180 would be more sensitive ,easier to mount , NOT ugly , would not a be a weak link .

True on all counts. But it costs over twice as much. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the Faital mid is going to significantly limit the design. It seems like a very solid driver that will do well here.

Any name ideas for this project? I have a few thoughts but nothing that is really feeling just right.

                                I have some random thoughts

And just for fun, one non-monkey coffin pun:
