True on all counts. But it costs over twice as much. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the Faital mid is going to significantly limit the design. It seems like a very solid driver that will do well here.

Still addressable in the crossover no? I mean otherwise how would we get those horn tweeter/12" two way speakers working...

It is dlr. You remembered correctly.

Not a bad idea. I'm trying to remember which member here has done a lot of experimentation with felt and other surface treatments for diffraction. It might be DLR.

As for the diffraction effects, the tweeter doesn't have much of a recessed waveguide so this could actually be a problem. My solution, acoustic felt! Build the box with proud sides, experiment with felt, and create a cool full or partial bodied grill cover with some sort of tweed...now we are talking!

This should fill the bill just fine. On an output capability perspective the mid is probably the weak link here. Certainly not the tweeter...

I will prob start with surface mount. A grill is a good idea. And a grill frame would likely be more of a diffraction issue than the frame of the mid.

Whichever is chosen the design should be final. Moving driver positions post x-over design is a no no.

A bit OT but certainly in the spirit of things.

I mean if surface mounting would not cause strong enough diffraction problems to require treatment in the crossover then the builder could build it either flush mounted or surface mounted. Changing the z offset 8mm can't be that huge of an issue I wouldn't think. But what do I know.

Both the mid and woofer here have the unsightly black cardboard gasket showing on the front surround. Even flush mounted, their look is unfinished. Maybe a grill detailed in the design would help. My lost JBL L100T with grill looks nice to me.

Edit: The mid is a good choice based on the design and budget. If you keep the build difficulty low more people may build it. Having to flush mount this driver will instantly scare off noobs, even though it's as simple as routing a 5.75" hole with 7.15" recess and filling the hexagon areas with bondo.

    That could be pretty slick.
