Cool idea! Have you done any modeling of it yet?

No. Just got the idea today. Still working on the other.
Seems to be plenty of overlap for sure.

if you do all paper, and bamboo is paper, the RS180P would fit (budget friendly)

I like the concept and think you're on to something fine there but I think you're shorting the design with that Vifa tweeter. Even though it pared well with the TB W5-1685 in the Copper Project your idea is a step or two above that.

          Maybe consider this: http://www.parts-express.com/tang-ba...eeter--264-822

It's a pretty sweet unit! Waveguide it in that design.

I like the idea, and it looks like a great build. Are you married to that mid? I think you'd be better served by this TB: http://www.parts-express.com/tang-ba...eaker--264-914 The reason being: A little larger, a lot more x-max, and a little more sensitive. This should all make it perform better when pushed, in theory.

              Re: Design idea.

John, I was trying to make use of one of the new drivers. But then, the "P" is new. It is less than half the price though. mmmmm, I'll consider it.
Jason, you may be right. With the inverted arrangement, size counts. I'll consider it.
Marty, I really want to use a ring radiator with a small footprint like the Polk. It is just under 3" though. I'll consider it.

              Thanks guys.

How about using an 8" woofer ?

                  Re: Design idea.

Lowell I agree with Marty. If you want a small format (face) tweeter my vote goes for the SB26STNC that I used in the Jonquils. Amazingly flat response and it just sounds great. That tweeter, the bamboo mid Jason suggested, and the RS180P John recommended has the makings of an awesome speaker.

                    Re: Design idea.

My $0.03... The ring radiator is a good idea, but I would personally feel more comfortable using the 3/4" flangeless in a shallow waveguide. It is just a better model all around IMHO. Another alternative, as suggested by others, is the little SB... but give the new CSS tweeters a look as well. I used them in the bookshelf speakers I demoed at DDIY, and found them to be juuuuust fine.

(just because I still like how they turned out)

Lowell, this looks like you have the simmerings of what could be a very nice little 3-way. Hope to see this come to fruition!
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

The SS Illuminator maybe? 56mm flange on the smaller one and 62 on the 1". Price is a little higher though...

                          Re: Design idea.

It does look good and would fit the size limitations.
The RS actually models better, to me, than the ES in 17L. 12x9x15
ES tuned to 27hz with 2" port and RS to 44 with two 1" ports on either side of the tweeter.

I did thoroughly enjoy these speakers, as did others, and I do like the look of a slightly waveguided flangeless, especially in real wood. However, I have been there done that. Plus with some opinions here that I respect plus this thread. http://techtalk.parts-express.com/sh...highlight=sb26 I think I will give the sb26 a try.
I did look at the Vifa NE4" but it just looks like a pain.
I imagine a 2nd order cross on the tweeter/mid maybe even on the mid/woofer. we will see.
                            Thanks for all the suggestions.

What problems do ya'll think I will encounter with the 'mid on top' configuration??

I like the mid on top and at 8 feet there's no difference.
