  • New Project: Bipole Dual Opposed Woofer Build

In the vain of the venerated Boominator of which the drivers are NLA I wanted to build a similar type of boombox. The goals are to have a boombox that has good SQ/ can last a long time on batteries/ not be to heavy/ dual opposed bipole design to have as close to 360' off access response. And be just plain fun.

In another thread Brian Steele had suggested the use of the dayton Classic 5 1/4" or maybe the 6 1/2 inch dayton classic. And handling tweeter duty would would be the the Goldwood 2x5 piezo tweeter.

What I need help with at this point in box volume and what size port to use (if any) and the crossover.

I planned on using this amp board.
    And this "Head Unit".

And hadling the bottom end would be a Tang Band W6-1139SIF 6-1/2" Paper Cone Subwoofer.

I would also incorporate a 12 volt battery pack and 12 volt 12 amp switching power supply to power it all.

Any help anyone could lend would be most greatly appreciated.

Why would you use a 2.1 amp for a 2.0 build? Use a MaxAmp20 from Accusafe.
Why not just build a Boominator? Those drivers are more expensive than the recommended Boominator drivers.
Of course a self designed boombox gives more satisfaction, and if you want that we sure can help you

Actually this is a 2.1 build with a 2.1 amp board. The boominator drivers are NLA as far as I can tell. I found a website with them listed but they have been out of stock for a long time.

But any help I could get in the design of this one would be greatly appreciated!

They aren't NLA for sure. Have a look for 'P.audio HP10W' or 'Goldwood GW-1058'.

The 'P.audio HP10W were the ones i found here: http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?...e=manufacturer

I have not been able to find them any where else. And the above site is always out of stock.

The goldwood woofer is a little on the expensive side: http://www.parts-express.com/goldwoo...oofer--290-380

I wanted to try to keep the 2 out of my 2.1 drivers under 200.00 and 4 of the goldwoods would be at that limit.

Do you have any other source for the drivers?

I have that amp board and currently toying with it. Works pretty well but be aware that it doesn't soft start, the low pass works but seems to be low order. Can't confirm to what order though. Also there is no high pass on the LR channels. Good news is there isn't any audible noise from the amp and sounds pretty good for the price.

Found this in PE's Pro Audio section: http://www.parts-express.com/goldwoo...oofer--290-380 . From the OP's driver selection he looks to be wanting something smaller than the original.
Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.

Ya those goldwoods would work but they are heavy and a little on the expensive side. I want my wife or my kids to be able to pick it up. So having 40 lbs of just woofers alone would be a bit much ;-)

Here is the DC160 in 6L sealed, which should integrate better with the sub.

Then buy 2 and make a Halfinator.

Do you think the sub would be needed outdoors? Or am I just adding a unnecessary component?

I thought about that but I want to fill a camp site with sound going in every direction. ;-)

A Halfinator is still bipolar. You remove one speaker cabinet (left-right, not front-rear)

Honestly, I don't think it would be needed. Give me a few minutes.

Let's try this for vented. I modeled with two drivers in parallel this time (front/back), so disregard the sealed model I posted above since it was only for one driver.

Some built in punch to make up for the lack of sub while still keeping things compact.
