  • Re: 2014 ky diy

Would anyone be interested in helping FirstBuild to acoustically treat the front room where we held last years event? My initial thought is to build some absorbers and hang them from the ceiling, but definitely open to suggestions. I'd like to have the event again this year and whatever work is done would make for a better venue. If absorbers are the way to go maybe we could do some kind of group buy for materials and people could build some for home while we build some for the venue.

I would be willing to help in one way or the other, I still have a couple 2' x 4' by 3" and a ton of gray burlap to cover others, from my Daughters wedding, lol . If a Med. Gray is a good color that is. No Cost also. I live 3 1/2 hours away, but my Brother lives there , so I could visit on a weekend or two. It was a great venue and centrally located. Let me know, as I'm not retired yet, and work can get in the way.

What is the material you have and do you know of a good supplier for it? Purchasing materials won't be a problem if I can get help identifying what to get and where to get it from.

"Roxul" I bought a dozen of more from an insulation company in Nashville. They have different depths, but I bought 3 inch I believe. I'm sure they sell it in Lville. It looks like Metro Material, 84 Lumber in Jefferson, Home depot in New Albany, or Lowes in Clarksville, Ind. I bought the burlap at hobby lobby, with a 40% discount online.

Buy Owens Corning 703 - 2 inch Single Pieces online at ATSAcoustics.com. Owens Corning 703 Rigid Fiberglass Board (RFB) Single Pieces have a dimension of 24 x 48 x 2 inches. RFB is one of the most popular materials for acoustic absorption. It is typically covered with fabric and mounted on the walls in a studio, control room, or listening room. Although AFB of similar density is equal

I've ordered from this place. They sell the "burlap" covering, too. Those 2'x4' rockwool bats would be perfect for what you're wanting to do.

Roxul Safe"n"Sound has a great NRC and is usually available at both Home Depot and Lowes. I found that ATS is good, but expensive. Your material of choice should be Roxul or good ole Owens Corning. Denim insulation works well also and is eco-friendly, so that's another potential material for you.

I bought from ATS because our HD and lowes suckit! They don't carry rockwool bats, no denim or solid FG bats.

Menard's carry ultratech ultrasound denin insulation. A bit more expensive than fiberglass insulation but health friendly and non itchy.

The UltraTouch Denim that HD sells can be purchased online for relatively cheap if you get the six pack of rolls for $36. Free shipping with a $45 order.

This is my go-to lining for speakers. Great NRC rating, eco-friendly and no itch (as Ani pointed out). It's not advisable to use fiberglass for vented enclosures BTW, but I'm sure everyone knows that. I'm a bit cautious too on the mineral wool (Roxul) in vented enclosures, but there's more than one way to skin a cat. You can always put mesh over it, or a layer of Dacron, and old cotton t-shirt, etc.

We dont have any Menards close by, I think like Owensboro is the closest. Sorry, B, I don't buy it on FG and rockwool in ported boxes. Its all I've ever used in them, the best in my preference. I might try denim someday when you send me some. ;)

Yeah, call me paranoid. I am. I just have a problem with the thought of glass fibers somehow being blown out of the port and straight down my throat. I don't use FG at all and I will wrap Roxul in another material to keep it from shredding, etc. Since I found the Denim stuff, that's pretty much all I use. Or I will use it in combo with Sonic Barrier, which is also good, but not cheap.

Our sourcing guy is looking into what we could get from existing suppliers, we use insulation in quite a few products so we'll see what he comes back with.

I think you could attract a lot more DIY Audio guys if you raffled off an Opal nugget ice maker this year....just sayin.
