  • A Hiquphon Substitute on the horizon?

    I ran across this:
HOME - SB Acoustics was formed to bring an alternative to the high-end transducer market by marrying the design talents of Danesian Audio (Denmark).

There doesn't appear to be anyone selling it at this time, but the preliminary data looks nicely comparable to a Hiquphon, I suspect at a much lower price. If its performance is anywhere close to the SB26 tweeters then it should be an excellent candidate for a 3/4" dome.

Appears to have nicely controlled directivity too.

:applause:- Another small format dome! This is always good news. Should be great, hopefully it's price will be reasonable.

If this is true, I will use it in my next build in place of the sb29.
        Thanks.

It does look very nice. I'm sure it will have performance similar to the SB26s. Nice!

Solen doesn't have any yet but it is listed for $20.59 CAD each. Nice price!

60 degree off-axis -10db at 20khz seems like a fantastic claim that I would love for someone to validate with their own measurements...I want to believe this is the "little tweeter that could", but corporations have a nasty habit to inspire wishful thinking...

Well so far SB has been very good with their specs. I haven't found one of their drivers yet that did not live up to their claims. And Jeff has tested quite a few of their products and found to be pretty spot on.

Yes, both T/S parameters and measured responses have matched the published ones with excellent agreement. So, I guess I don't expect any surprises here.

That is the beauty of a small format dome. Most exhibit this behavior as a 3/4" dome does not become directional until ~18K where a 1" starts to around 13K... It effects mostly in the power response and off axis, but other advantages such as a lighter dome/coil assy etc. makes small domes exceptional. Of coarse at a price: No matter the Fs, they rarely cross well below 3K...

Keep us posted, as soon as they are available I want to have a pair in my grubby lil' mitts for measurements.

Man does not live by measurements alone, a little music helps.

Oh man, both tweeters mentioned in this thread sound awesome! Of course, I am biased because I am a mid-dome fan and once I get my Javelin project in shape will be working on a relatively compact 3-way that also uses a mid-dome and I think a 3/4 tweeter with a smaller faceplate (less than the typical 4 inches anyways...) is just what the doctor ordered. Now if only SB would make a 9 inch Satori woofer!!!!

Lower than typical Fs for a small dome, 0.6mm of Xmax one-way which is a little longer than the typical dome tweeter, mild peaking before the low end roll off should make crossover life a little easier - especially with a parallel resistor as part of the circuit, decent FR with good dispersion, and looking at the impedance it appears there is possibly some copper in the motor.

I bet this could handle a 2k crossover point in small 2-ways, and if the price stateside is similar to the advertised price at Solen - I imagine Madisound and Meniscus will have trouble keeping them in stock.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.
