Re: A Hiquphon Substitute on the horizon?

Very good news for DIYer's; less than good news for guy behind Hiquphon -- he does make very fine tweeters, their just pricey.

Now if only SB would make a 9 inch Satori woofer!!!!
There is a 7,5" version coming, too small?

I bet this could handle a 2k crossover point in small 2-ways, and if the price stateside is similar to the advertised price at Solen - I imagine Madisound and Meniscus will have trouble keeping them in stock.
The description includes this: "Saturation controlled motor system". The impedance makes it look like copper in the gap, but their description is not specific. It will be interesting to see what they have done. I would think that they would specify it as a selling point.

Another difference with the Hiquphon is that they are sold in matched pairs +/- 0.5db. I'm interested in seeing the consistency of the SB.

I also want to see what they've used for the "Optimized damping in pole cavity".

If that $20 price is accurate these should be an awesome buy. I would assume it has to be close, since the larger SB26 is only around $35.

I can tell you from the SB26ADC I just opened up, I'd be very surprised if there wasn't copper in the gap.

My three SB26ADC all measure very close. I haven't tested them directly against each other, so I won't make a DB claim here.

Yes, I want to see the optimized damping in the pole cavity, since the SB26ADC had none (but has a shaped rear chamber cup). Adding F3 felt had interesting effects I can't quite understand (improvements).

This all said the SB26ADC is the highest prices non-Satori tweeter that SB makes, so it'll be interesting to see how it compares to such an affordable model.

Which I'm sure will just drive the price up to what they are "worth" (as in the definition of what a buyer will pay). :blues:

I don't think it has copper, the shape of the curve to me doesn't look that way.
It already has a small diameter coil, and what they say buy "saturation controlled motor system" I think is they tried to get the iron parts in the motor that matters most to saturation with the magnet's field by geometry and magnet strength. The more saturated the iron, the less inductance the coil will have.

Ok right, I just looked at the two impedance graphs (comparing the larger siblings), I can see what you mean now.

I wrote what "I think", I may be wrong.
If it matters Hiquphon's also don't have shorting sleeves or rings to my knowledge

The SB26 domes do have a shorting ring, but you may be right on this one based on the way they described it and the low price. Still, I have found this method to produce some good results in low inductance and lower 3rd order distortion in other speakers.

Madisound will be picking them up with their next SBA order.

Meniscus has them on order too, along with the 5" Satori.

Seems these have dropped off the map. I went to both Meniscus and Madisound to see if they were available yet but they're no longer listed.
Anyone know what happened to them?

Best way to find out is to email or call either company.
