Just go take a ride on the Amazon. Projectors are one of the things they sell absurdly cheap. We got a 1080P one for like $60 on sale a few weeks ago. Sure its not what you want for a dedicated home theater, but its perfect for occasional use watching a movie in the back yard after dusk. Cheap projectors are one of the things Amazon absolutely spams in the flash deals and other assorted sales.

I wouldn't go with less than 1080p, especially if you're going to be sitting near the screen at all or the screen will be 100" or greater, and at least 2000 lumens.

It's small, portable, relatively powerful PC with a 854x480 projector built-in. Check the dimensions, its smaller than the photos indicate. I use a Brix computer for my HT setup, great little thing almost small enough to fit in your pocket.

On projectors, look at the "back door" before buying. Check that lamp life and price!!! It's like printers: Many brands will GIVE you the printer free with re-bate and eat your lunch with print cartridges! Quite a few projectors use only an OEM lamp (or very high-priced one with a short full-rated lumen life) in a cheap projector. The better projectors now have a "normal" and "high brightness" setting on the lamp, with the "high" needed only in fully lit office rooms (why?) and "normal" extending the lamp life 4-10 times. You can get a "last year's model" or a "re-furbished" (just like new or better) for well under $500 now. Get a $120-150 Da-Lite Video Projection Screen (ceiling mount) that's a 96"er, and go. You pay $50-150 more for a 108" wide screen, which I don't think is worth the money. A crystal screen is the best all-around, while a lenticular screen is the brightest and highest contrast at the expense of the narrowest viewing angle. Go with Da-Lite brand. They've been making projection screens for 80-some years and have forgotten more about making them and about surfaces than all the Johnny-Come-Lately's that charge 2-3 times the price ever will know. Check with any A/V rental supply and see what they use.

Try woot.com, they sometimes have great projector blowouts... 720p is the least you will get... and i'd skip the pocket ones and go with one of the full sized one - should come in under 500, maybe even 350-400.

Do you know how cheap projectors are these days? Just go to projectorcentral.com and take a look, and by the way, no one sells 640*480 projectors anymore, since the technology is so inexpensive.

    Cheap projector for garage?

Anyone have any suggestions? Cheapest is best, must be able to display 640*480 or better. This will be hooked to a digital tv tuner using a db 32 antenna i built.
Working...
