  • Wolf's Triumph Sub...using some stockpiled items finally

Last week I finally got started cutting some wood for these. I used 3/4" material, so Wolf spec's a 9.5" cube as opposed to the 9" cube for the 1/2" material.
I wanted to do a cool roundover on the side corners so 3/4" made more sense. Also, I didn't have any dowels large enough...a 1" dowel is specified... so I used a scrap piece of MDF instead. Knuckle test says it passes.

I have been looking to use some of my "inventory" that I have accumulated over the years and saw that I had three of the TB 5 1/4" neo subs. I also found a few unopened PE 25 watt plate amps and a $8 'open box special' at a tent sale a few years ago. They all work. They're cute little buggers, nice looking with their brushed alum. plates and good layout. I see they are $30 now, a very good deal I believe. I got the new ones I had a bunch of years ago for $25 and felt like I was robbing PE.. didn't stop me though.

After a few passes on my router table, I had a nice 1" roundover going on the sides. These will be veneered with probably leftover scraps of Teak, Walnut, and whatever else I can find enough to do a whole sub with. Unfortunately, the roundovers mean a few seams, never fun, but I've got that down okay enough.

I forgot to use a scrap on the exit side of the boxes as I passed them through. I was having an intermittent shutdown of the router while I was working which threw me off a bit. Turned out to be the router plug vibrating out of the side mounted speed controller, I'll have to fix that....or maybe I'll just forget about it thinking I'll remember next time I use it, only to drive myself crazy again trying to figure out why my router table keeps sputtering... I hate me.

A mix of Titebond wood glue and some MDF dust makes a nice filler. It's harder than the base MDF though, so be careful sanding if you ever dare...

I love the look of veneer wrapped around a roundover. I'm not sure which way I'll orient the grain. ^^^^This way is certainly easiest, but there will be several seams considering I'm using scraps. I've wrapped a 1" roundover with the grain oriented the other way before, but I don't think it will look as cool.

Anyway, I'm kind of going for this look:

I will use one of the subs with this, my laptop system on the dining room table. I have a cool wife if I can say I have a laptop 2.1 sound system on my dining room table don't I? She likes these speakers a lot. They're actually a reoriented version of Wolf's Ruby K's that had the wild Rubik's Cube paint job from several years ago.
The other two will probably end up being gifts for family or friends. But the purpose is to finally use of some of the bargains that I have purchased from PE in the past few years. I think the TB subs were only around $25-$30 at the time I purchased them on sale... They're $59 now. I don't know if the ferrite version would work as well, they are only $29 now.

Mad has the 5.25" used in the Triumph for $10.90 each, times two. PE only has the 3.5" version used in the Ruby K's. That's about $111 for parts for a cool looking and good sounding sub. The passives are a plus for me though they add to the cost... I love the look. Since I had all the parts but the PR's I'll only end up spending about $70 or so for the PR's for three of these. See honey? That's why I buy stuff from PE when it's on a fantastic sale. Look how much I saved! ;)

I'll think of them as a mini TriskaSub, or a mini-mini Sunfire Subwoofer. 40 Hz with woofs and passives A-Flappin' should be fun. Thanks Ben for all your great designs. You've practically furnished my dining room.

    More to come...

You'll be happy with the Triumph. I gifted one to some friends for their anniversary and they love it in their 12x15 family room. Thanks again to Larry for the parts for that as a wedding gift to me, I payed it forward to an anniversary gift.

Got a little bit more done on one of these. Walnut veneer scraps covered this smallish box pretty well. Three seams, but they disappear pretty well.

I can't wait to hear this thing rumble. It may spur me on to finish the other two.
The veneer is dusty, that's why it looks crummy in the pics, but it's super-smooth and ready for poly after I cut the holes.

Re: Wolf's Triumph Sub...using some stockpiled items finally

              A little more work done...

Driver openings cut. Woofer hole breathing room applied crudely with a drill rasp...

Veneer came out pretty nice this time. I love Walnut.

First coat of poly after a good dusting and vac'ing...

Should have these done in 3-4 days. I'm going to try to get the finish shiny on this one. It will match a pair of Overnight Sensations we Christmas gifted to my wife's niece and her husband. They live in a NYC apartment and they say the OS's are perfect for their apartment. I asked the husband Joel if he things some more bass would be a problem... he said his next door neighbor practices his saxophone quite a bit, so I think he will be okay. They're courteous folks anyway.

I veneered all sides and the top. I'll roll on some Rustoleum water-based black latex on the bottom after I finish poly on the rest of the cabinet. I love smaller projects like this. They can be done start to finish in a week or two without killing yourself. (I took a little longer, I know)

I didn't bother to create breathing room for the passives... since the back is open, there is plenty of room for air movement I think, at least it looked so as I held the PR up to the opening. The TB driver on the other hand needed more breathing room. Maybe not with 1/2", but certainly with 3/4" stuff.

              More to come...

Very nice job!! I just finished a pair of these a week or so ago. I am still amazed at the sound that they are capable of. You won't be disappointed.

That looks really nice! I tried doing corners like that once, but pretty much wrecked the boxes trying to fill in the amount of mdf that was ripped off the front and rear of the box. Then I tried to paint it, lol. I ended up burning them hahaha.

                      Thanks.
I kind of screwed these up as well. Sort of a minor screw-up. I forgot to remember to put a board behind the box as I ran it through the router table.... there was some tear-out. I fixed it with some glue/MDF dust mixture and all was good. (See the third and fourth pic from the top)

I ALWAYS screw something up on every project I do. It adds character I say.

                              Hey Tom, that looks great.

Can you tell me a little more about the backing on that veneer? It looks a little thicker than the paper-backed stuff I've used. Is it paper or wood or cloth backed? Adhesive?

TIA and again that looks marvelous.
