Can you tell me a little more about the backing on that veneer? It looks a little thicker than the paper-backed stuff I've used. Is it paper or wood or cloth backed? Adhesive?

It's regular Woodcraft veneer, 10 mil backing I think. I did a close-close up is probably why it looks extra thick... not so in real life. I did a macro-zoom and the lens was only about 2 inches from the piece. At a normal distance it blends nicely, you can't really see a seam.



Third Coat of poly...


I used VeneerSupplies.com heatlock iron-on glue to adhere the veneer as I almost always do. It's foolproof pretty much and a lot of fun to do.

But... I just ordered a clearance strip of some nice Birds Eye Sapele to finish one of the remaining two with.

I finished this up today. I think there's 6-7 coats of rub-on poly on top of the walnut.






It really puts out some plenty loud and pleasingly low bass, especially when placed close to a wall.

For now it's paired up with the white-coned speaker system pictured earlier in this thread... and it's a good match. 25 watts doesn't sound like much, but it's plenty to rattle windows and stuff on the hutch in the same room.

I love projects like this, although they don't visually look as impressive as the 'big' systems we typically build, they surprise you with how musical and rewarding they can be.

I played some bass test tones this morning and my wife said with a kind of scared/amazed look on her face... "that's not the Triumph sub, is it?" She had to see it for herself. I can't wait to finish the other two.

This is a great underdog that can perform well above it's weight.
I'm pleased she was surprised and even albeit scared, impressed; as you are too of course.

to get the signal to the sub's plate amp and the the Lapai 2020 amp: http://www.parts-express.com/lepai-l...upply--310-301

I set the volume a bit over half way on the Lepai and adjusted the sub till it blended nicely. Then I can adjust the overall level with the volume on the laptop.

I have a remote turn-on for the amp that I've used on another system, like this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/10-BHC9938U-1-Etek/39520471
but you can get them cheap now that it's close to Christmas time. I use that to turn on the sub amp since it's on/off is also it's volume.
