  • Dayton Esoteric ES140Ti- the longest throw 5" woofer ever?

I just skimmed through the January, 2014, issue of Voice Coil.

The numbers they got from the ES140Ti are so good I half suspect there was a mistake somewhere and the figures were inadvertently doubled (peak-peak rather than peak).

Can you believe 82% BL at 12.4mm and 75% CMS at 11.9mm? With outstanding motor symmetry and very good suspension symmetry?

If that holds up, wow! The motor and suspension is so good that Xmax is actually limited by inductance. I don't know that I've ever seen that before.

Again, if that's accurate hats off to PE! And even if it's off by a factor of two, that's still exemplary performance for a woofer that size even if it probably isn't the longest throw 5" woofer in the history of 5" woofers.

Rated xmax is 5mm so I am guessing that must be doubled. Still looks like it is underrated though!

Chris Roemer and I measured a pair about 6 weeks ago. There's a significant peak starting at 2.4k and maxing at 3.5k. It's not small, about 11dB, so crossing it anywhere above 2k will be problematic. So yes it'll go low and move air, but it won't go too high.

Marty (and I) measured the Z-profile with a DATS, the FR he's talkin' about has just been traced off the .pdf file (so far).

DATS (average of 2 units, broken in by hand): Qes 0.56, Qms 7.0, (Qts 0.52), Vas 0.21cf, Fs 57 (other values to "spec").

Chris, do you think/guess/etc. they may loosen-up in time? Too soon to tell is a valid answer, of course.

They might loosen up more eventually, but box models compared between the two are already pretty similar (i.e. the parms. are "off" in complimentary directions and values).

I haven't seen this article yet, but I'm thinking it's peak-peak, since I have the Klippel data we obtained during the development. The VC overhang is only 5mm and it's not an underhung driver. However, the motor design is optimized to use some of the extra flux from that big Neo ring to create substantial fringe fields that lead to a less sudden or severe drop-off in BL at the edges of the BL curve. The original Esoteric Series thread has the Klippel data posted.

Gotta hand it to ya, Rory. Dayton driver motor design is right up there with the best drivers around. Thanks for making such excellent drivers available at such competitive prices. Even though it's one of the earliest of PE's high-end drivers, I just put a Bamboo Continuum through a series of measurements and the RS28a continues to perform on the level of a $200 tweeter. Just a fantastic value in all of these drivers.

I suspect that is the case. Just odd because Voice Coil usually publishes peak and not p-p.

Still quite a nice effort for a small midbass.

Do you have Xmech and Xlim handy?

I only see the 5.5 and 7" versions when I search the site are others coming?
                    4 ohm?

I hope so- I think these were just to 'test the waters'. See how much demand is there.

I just checked the results as well and based on the rest values, the linear excursion values stated in the text match the graphs. Those numbers are pretty incredible. I can't figure out how they'd be incorrect. The Bl value matches closely to the spec. So that passes the sniff test.

Now, honestly, the response curves do not leave me jumping for joy.

Yeah that FR is pretty rough looking...and the waterfall plots show it too.

Wish PE could do something about getting smoother responses.
You cannot EQ out the amplification of distortion that happens down
                            stream of a non-linearity.

The FR was unimpressive to me, especially considering the motor the speaker has. Far from flat and a lot of resonances at both ends.
