  • Carmody's Carrera Build thread Trans-laminated (PIC HEAVY)

As usual I will thank Paul Carmody again for posting these build's. I really enjoy the way he voices his builds. Although these are not completed (NOT VENEERED) but I just had to listen too them.

I also need to thank my dad for assembling the crossover for me. I was pretty burnt out from the labor with this cabinet so I am thankful he got that crossover network together really quickly.

Thanks to CraigK for selling me the Hiquphon's!

Goals for venturing into this project were as follows: I wanted to try working with plywood instead of MDF, I wanted to try trans-laminating a build, I wanted to work with and experience high end drivers, I wanted to try book-matching raw veneer and using a cold press glue technique. The cold press and bookmatching is why I didn't finish these yet I wanted to try that on my aquilo's incase I botch the glue up. I had to do a lot of sanding.

I need to thank my neighbor for lending me a hand on the glue up's and letting me work in his garage when he had it heated through the winter.

It's not a big cabinet (I went larger that spec due to thickness of walls) but it required a lot of labor. I had to sand a lot. I would call this a "poor man's translam" because I cheated and made panels. I found that when trimming to size you can easily make translam veneer with a tablesaw it was coming out so nicely. The only negative thing I found was that this plywood shrank a lot during the month that I was working on it on and off. I would suggest going about a 1/16th on the exterior speaker diameter to account for this. I had to go back and sand out the hole bigger which really was time consuming. They fit perfect as you can see in the pics before the glue up. The glue ups took forever because I didn't use screws or trim nailer. I had to wait and usually just did a panel a day until complete. Then I sanded a lot. I basically cut a bunch of strips and glued them up and cut them to length for the front/top/backs. The walls and 1.5 inch thick. Front top and back are just over an inch now. They are very dead.

Just incase I forgot to mention you have to sand a lot with trans-laminated cabinets.

Nice work on the cabs, can't wait to see what they look like veneered. That's a great choice for a high-end build, i really liked them when Craig brought his set to Iowa a few years ago.

I thought the translam box was awesome... THEN you cut the facets...WOW!!!! Can you love and inanimate object? I think you can.

Great job, those speakers just ooozzzzz premium luxury to me and I've never even heard them, I'm sure if I had I would be gushing even more.

They just look so cool. Have you chosen the veneer, or finish yet? Surely you're not going to hide the facets.

I don't get it. What are you going to veneer? Why cover up all that hard work! Looks great like it is.

I will just veneer the Sides none of the facets! I think I bought this one or similar. http://www.dyed-veneer.com/Chenchen-...-Veneer-4.aspx

+1 on the veneer choice. I like unusual grains and that looks like it will really have some movement after it has a finIsh on it.

Thanks, that place's veneer is pretty reasonable and they usually have bookmatched pic's which helps with deciding on what you like. It's from Colorado I think and shipping took about a week.

thanks for the link on the veneer source... bookmarked for future needs. pricing seems generally very reasonable.

MIKE! You cut up that clear, smooth grain ply and exchange it for a corduroy look?!?

JK. That looks like a lot of work, but I really like the facets--simple, but great effect. Can't say I recall anything quite like that. I'm looking forward to see them veneered and finished.

                          Beautiful work.

Keep the end grain as is, save the veneer for another project.

I agree with just about everyone else - leave it as is and seal it up. You might have to do some sanding.....have you done any yet? ;)

                            Great work!

                              Very, very nice Mike.

I love the translam look and your project came out looking super nice -- love the angled facets as others have said. I'm glad you'll be leaving all but the sides exposed, it's a cool look. We tend to brace and generally design the insides of our speakers a lot as well as the outside, and then we cover it all up... this look leaves some of the structure exposed so to speak, it's like you can see the bones of the thing almost... what it's made of.

The more I see others do the translam thing, the more I want to try it myself.

                              Nice!
