  • Speaker Impedance question

Hello, I am working on a 2 way bookshelf speaker and I got the crossover sounding really nice and the freq. response measures flat with in +/- 3db, but the impedance of the tweeter drops to 3 ohms at 2.5-3 kHz. My question is; is that too low? should I be concerned about the amp? Changing the value of the parallel inductor on the tweeter side raises the impedance but at the expense of frequency response. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Can you show us your crossover? There are a couple of possibilities and having that will make it much easier to help.

That indicates that you took the filter Q a bit too high. If the amp is rated for 4 ohms it's OK, as amps are usually configured to work fine to 0.7 times the nominal impedance rating.

        Re: Speaker Impedance question

As Bill referenced, it depends on your amp/receiver. If by the speaker terminals it says "6-16 OHM Speakers", your speakers as they are have too low an impedance (maybe) for your amp. It depends on how long and at what frequency(ies) your speaker is 3 ohms. There are commercially sold speakers rated at "8 OHMS" that drop below 3 ohms and 99.9% of all amps and receivers have no problems with them.
All that said, the guru's here can help you "tweak" that to an easier to drive load, probably just by moving a resistor in the HP XO circuit.

You could try moving R13 to the beginning (in front of your CO cap)
