  • horizontal aligned woofers?

Why do i never see any DIY speakers with dual woofers in a side by side configuration.
You seem to see it in high end studio moniters? I think the esthetics are appealing anyway.

There's nothing wrong with that configuration. That's actually a good configuration for a center channel where it keeps the TM vertical and decreases or eliminates horizontal lobing. However, my guess would be that most people would prefer the smaller footprint of a vertical woofer configuration for a left and right stereo configuration. For a bookshelf speaker, the horizontal configuration is very attractive.

Greetings LITTLEME60. Which speaker is that in the thumbnail image? I used to have a Boston Acoustics Center with the same configuration but wider and lower. It sounded fantastic for CC duty, handled anything you could throw at it, and yes, I like the aesthetics myself too... All the best, Mike

If your talking about MTM config. There are quiet a few out there but most are just set up vertical and not layed down or built in a tower confi. A MTM is a MTM whether on its side or vertical.

DIY (Do it yourself): Cabinetry, speakers, subwoofers, crossovers, measurements. Jon and Thomas have probably designed and built as many speakers as any non-professionals. Who are we kidding? They are pros, they just don't do it for a living. This has got to be one of the most advanced places on the net to talk speaker building, period.

To name a few, hope this helps!

Because doing so results in a narrower midrange dispersion pattern on the horizontal plane and wider on the vertical, which is usually the opposite of what you want. When you see it done with studio monitors it's usually at least a 3-way with the crossover point to the midrange driver low enough that the dispersion issue in the mids doesn't occur.

It's from the sweetwater music catalog. TC Electronics make some similar monitors.

Often times such cabs are installed in studio bulkheads.

That is a wtmw arrangement and is a great way to build a center channel. Their is a Swope variant of that if I recall correctly. I also think there is a statement center like that.
I think they are just more rare because they are expensive to build and only used in HT set ups. Almost any tmww could be built in this configuration with a little crossover work.

                  It's an ATC monitor.

The side by side 3-way orientation (W-T/M-W) xovers the woofers low enough that the dispersion isn't as much of a factor. In these style designs, 800-1k xover points keep the characteristics of a good horizontal dispersion. Of the 2-way variety in a horizontal MTM as such, you really should have a fairly wide-band driver capable of xovering that low to keep it's dispersion as wide it should be.

And then, sometimes you place woofers horizontally aligned in an MTM with a horn:

The 88 Special over at DIYSG is a two way with horizontal woofers, however it crosses pretty liw with and SEOS guide and pro woofers.

                        Re: horizontal aligned woofers?

MOST "MTM"s designed for "normal" L/R (main) duty (w/the woofers orientated vertically) won't perform that well if laid down horizontally in an attempt to use them as a low-profile CC. That's because of the resultant "lobing" (and therefore potentially poor off-axis performance) due to a higher crossover point (say, 2000 to 2500 Hz).

Even though they may look nearly identical, better "MTM" speakers that ARE designed to be used AS a CC will achieve better performance (due to less lobing and greater off-axis dispersion) by utilizing a "lower than NORMAL" Fc, perhaps down into the 1.2-1.6kHz range.

The Zaph BAMTM I use for a center has a low crossover point and is good until about 20 degrees of listener offset, per Zaph.

Besides, you must have missed (in the "Project Showcase") The Impresario, the Triune, Robert & Curt's UniCC, and The AviaTrix.

What I was concerned with is the normal right/left arrangement, not any center channel.
