  • Really short microphone stand or ???

Ok, so if I plan on testing my short speaker sitting on the floor, where do I get a really short mic stand? It has to be able to get down to about 10 inches or so.

Thanks! I ended up buying two, one very short one and one medium height.

If you're doing a ground plane measurement even ten inches is too high. I put my mic on a piece of cab damping foam, about 2 inches off the ground.

Bill, I'm not *trying* to do a ground plane measurement, just a normal one to import into PCD. Since the speakers will be sitting on the floor during use, I figure that will be the best way to measure them. Am I not thinking clearly about this?

There's two ways to look at it. You can do a true half-space, first going outdoors, taking a ground plane that covers up to the baffle step, then measuring the speaker on it's back from above, for above the baffle step, splicing the two. The other is in-room, the speaker where it's going to be placed, the mic at the listening position. The former removes the room from the equation entirely, the latter makes the room response part and parcel of the end result. There are valld points of view for and against both. When prototyping I use the former, as I can't predict what will happen in the user's room. The latter is probably the better if you're designing for use in a specific room only.

A standard-height stand with an adjustable boom arm will get that low.
