  • Thoughts on other forums in regards to "audiophoolery"

I know many things are touchy subjects, cables, interconnects, Capacitors etc.

Was just curious what forums are known maybe to be a bit more towards objective and less into the "silly" side of audio?

This forum I consider grounded in reality and very educational and insightful overall.

    Any other ones to recommend??

    HT-Guide, AV-Science, DIY-Audio

edit: In HT-Guide, I was referring to the Mission Possible DIY subforum.

AV Science. The audiophools silly enough to venture there don't receive a warm welcome and don't stay for long.

Based on the frequent, lengthy, and acrimonious cap and wire threads, one could conclude that "reality" has a variable and perhaps subjective definition here as well.

FWIW, I would put DIY Audio high on the list of foolery rather than reality. Back to that perception thing.

Yes, but there appears to be more in depth technical and theory threads at DIYA than here. So I wouldn't write them off completely.

Outside of speakers I consider diyaudio a good 5+ years ahead of gear discussions here.

Jon Marsh and some others over at htguide likes pricey caps so I guess all his wisdom is suspect to the wary eagle eyed skeptic. so I'd avoid there.

Darn, I was hoping this thread would be about the audiophools! Audio Asylum has to be near if not at the top of that list.

Mixed bag. Some good stuff, lots of half truths. There's one piece on there about speaker design that's funny. Basically their editor spews nonsense, but to his credit includes sidebars by Phil Bamberg that amount to "well, actually..."

Their editor's reference multichannel system uses (or used, last time I visited the site) a toppled MMTMM center channel with 7" midwoofers and a tweeter on a 180deg waveguide, which should tell you all you need to know.

I think they're funded by or somehow related to a speaker company named RBH, because their coverage of that firm's products is relentless and more upbeat than warranted by the designs, which tend to things like .the center channel I mention above or a tower with three widely spaced large format tweeters and four midwoofers in an arc around them.

"Based on my library and laboratory research, I have concluded, as have others, that the best measures of speaker quality are frequency response and dispersion pattern. I have not found any credible research showing that most of the differences we hear among loudspeakers cannot be explained by examining these two variables." -Alvin Foster, 22 BAS Speaker 2 (May, 1999)

Plenty of "audiophoolery" on a sub-forum or two there, though to your credit guys like you are usually there to point out the obvious.

I think diyA is the best as far as technical discussion but you do often have to weed through the bs.

I find HT Guide to be as good as this forum with a bit less controversy and disagreement. I see several members from here post there. The
designs are usually with more expensive drivers and x-over's. You can express an opinion without one of the sacred cows of this forum jumping
down your throat with a lecture.

That, plus the mods let the trolls have just enough rope to hang themselves and then they go off to troll heaven.
