No need to be embarrased! Have a question. I was looking at the Sony SRSX5 on paper (haven't heard any of these) because of the features and my kids got me a gift certificate. Did you hear this, and how did it do vs. the SRS X33?

I actually ended up with the older SRS-X3 instead of an X33 though. Refurbished models were available, and still are, for $60. That was too good to pass up.
The site Paul linked, Oluv's Gadget's, has measurements of a lot of the newer and more popular speakers of this type. If you are planning on spending $150 or so, you might want to look at the JBL Charge 2, JBL FLip 3, Bose Soundlink Mini II, Denon Envaya Mini DSB100, too. These are all in the same ballpark as the Sony models and each has advantages/disadvantages.
Or check your local paper for brick and mortar deals on the X3. Local shops were clearing them out at $60 brand new. And they are still available Manufacturer Refurbished for $60 on eBay...

Will the pre-made crossover purchase be next, Paul? ;)Some people are addicted to Vicodin. I'm addicted to speaker building.

Re: Some thoughts on DSP, and an embarrassing confession
Paul, why not use eq/dsp in your computer if a minidsp or other dsp solution is a problem? Not that buying a speaker is a bad thing, especially in that price range. It makes sense in fact. Myself, I use a full range driver and eq the **** out of the low end to get what I need. In the nearfield it seems to be happy even if excursion gets up there at times. The box is small and the bass is very satisfying.
Now, if you want a lot of bass at your seat and not bother your coworkers, check out gainphile's computer setup. This is where DIY can destroy the commercial stuff. Think 'outside' the box ;)

Re: Some thoughts on DSP, and an embarrassing confession
I picked up a Jawbone Jambox over a year ago. After hearing one at a waterski tournament. Unbelievable sound with great bass for such a small box. I can fit it in my back pack or suitcase to take on vacation. It hooks up to any Blue Tooth device. Pretty cool!
