  • Dayton RS180 crossed to Ribbon, already done?

    Hi everyone,

Has there been a dayton rs180 kit which there is a ribbon such as the aurum cantus ribbons, or really any ribbon large enough to cross to those woofers? If not would there be any inherent issues with a design like that or would it be a good design to create?

EDIT: I should add that i dont mean the statement monitors, i mean a TMM/MTM with the RS180 and the Aurum Cantus (or other large low crossing ribbon)

    Thanks for the help!

Yes it can be done but there are very few ribbons that can work well, especially with the MTM.

I have been meaning to do this one for a while with the NeoCD3 in the Amiga cabinet. I'd like to try both the aluminum and paper RS180. Just never got around to cutting a baffle.

Lou Corragio's Cryolites were a TM with the RS180 and a Neo3 planar tweeter.
IMVHO, the tweeter was crossed a bit too low at 2150, but lots of guys like the design.

I probably have the build docs if you want to go that direction.

I would build these in a heartbeat.

That was a marvelous bookshelf speaker!

I actually used the Neo3 to 1.8k, and Paul C has as well in his PET. It is very capable.

Re: Dayton RS180 crossed to Ribbon, already done?

Being that I have a pair of NeoCD3.0 on hand, and they have been measured, the HD that MY pair shows very high third order up to about 3k. Now mind you, mine are second-hand, but Jeff said that they look and seem to operate just fine, and that it's likely this model just measures that way. Unfortunately, I don't think I have the files anymore.

I can say however, that John Hollander built a 2-way TM with the RS180P and the HiVi RT1.3 planar using a cauer-elliptical series xover as proposed by Neville Thiel.
Those won their class at MWAF 2014, and they are a very nice sounding design.

That said- I think the RS180P is capable to reach the 3.0, but I doubt the aluminum will oblige such a high xover point.

If AMTs qualify then the Vultus in my sig use the RS180. I prefer over the RS180 over the P version used in the Seriatim

I am in that beginning stages of a new project using the AMT3-4, an RS180P and RS180. sims seem to look good, but its too darn cold to get real measurements. So I wish I had more to share. Should have something more in the coming months.

Thank you for your .02 Wolf, this project is sounding pretty promising whether that be a design someone has made or just the premise.

I have never personally heard an AMT but from what i have heard 'of' them i think that would be another possible design. Thanks!
