  • Paul Carmody's Carrera - Front Port Placement?

The only girlfriend approved location for these speakers is essentially flush against a wall. Should I move the port to the front? if so where, and will this impact driver placement? does a port that is 2" diameter and 7" long still work? Should i go slotted instead? any and all input is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

Front port is fine. Try to keep the width and driver locations as close as possible (tweeter to top/sides, woofer to tweeter spacing). Slot port is fine as long as you keep volume after port displacement the same.

Thanks Eagle, I'm planning on building to the spec shown in the attached image.

If anyone sees that I'm overlooking anything please let me know.

I'd say this "should do", but be aware that you're building a "compromised" Carrera (like dropping in a VW motor - but probably not that bad).

3 bad things, in order of worstness?

1 - Putting the speaker against the wall will be the worst thing, you can expect a loss of "imaging and spaciousness" as well as possibly muddy or boomy bass.

2 - Having the tweeter equidistant from the top and side edge will change the baffle's diffraction signature "somewhat". Won't be horrible, but not the best (certainly not as designed). You can model the changes with Tolvan's "Edge" software.

3 - Looks like your port will almost be connected to (touching) the inner side wall. Probably will slightly change the tuning and may affect the airflow, but not the worst thing.

IIWM, I'd vent it out the top or bottom. The XO could be adjusted for "on the wall" location as well (w/maybe a partial reduction of BSC).

Get a new girlfriend. You placement on front will not work well. You are spending to much money to compromise on the cab. Addind a few inches to the height and front porting below the woofer would be a better option.

Thanks Chris, I agree, none of this is ideal..

Down ported could be an interesting build. I'll have to familiarize myself with this magical "Edge" software.

Yes, this will work. As long as the baffle width remains the same, you can adjust the depth to accommodate the new height. Should be no problem at all.

Down porting will lower the effective tuning unless the air gap between the speaker and the lower plate is significantly larger than the port diameter. If it is not, the narrow air gap will act as an extension to the port. How much? Hard to predict. Sometimes it's advantageous. Having the speakers right up against the wall can make for tubby bass, and a lower tuning may help thin them out.

But this is all conjecture. I think you'd be better off building the box with a slot port, or simply making the box taller to accommodate the regular cylindrical port on the front baffle.

That is a really nice look. Nice wood working.

Andy (or anyone else who happens to know), what woofer did you use in the speakers pictured above (New Horizons)?

That is a set of New Horizons! designed by "mzisserson". It uses the ND16 tweeter and ND105-4 woofers, rear mounted.
Not sure the plans are public at this time, but Andy can fill you in I'm certain...
