    Digger 8 Sub Build

Well I am at it again. I have been saving up for awhile now and finally started my subwoofer build.

Below are some pics of the assembled cabinet. I made a small modifacation to the original by having the baffle made from 1.5 inch thick MDF and adding a window brace. Other then that it is the same design as Johnny's.

    Re: Digger 8 build

After I assembled the flat pack I let the glue dry over night and I sanded and veneered the cabinet to match my OS MTM's, OS CC, and soon to be completed OS TM's.

I was very pleased with the build up to the point I made a terrible mistake veneering the PR side of the cabinet. As many of you know once contact cement touches contact cement it is all over. I was trying to center the veneer by hand because the PR I didn't have long enough dowels to keep it separate. And then the unthinkable happened, it touch. And that is where it stayed. I rolled it out and then trimmed the veneer. I then took a small piece of what I trimmed and laid it in place, rolled it out and trimmed it.

I still am not totally happy but it is better then nothing.

    Listening Impressions:

Well I have to give it to Johnny, he designed a mighty fine sub. LFE is off the hook. Music with a low end sounds great. No one in our house can believe the difference. And what we have been missing by having such a lousy little sub for so long. Our whole apartment shakes, rattles and rolls. Thank you Johnny for such a great sub design, and a big thanks to Tom Jones for making such a fabulous flat pack.

I also had Tom Jones make a second sub, so when this system is done it will have two earth shacking subs.

Now that is ROCK AND ROLL!!!

I have to give credit where credit is due. Tom Jones aka takitaj here on the PE board makes some really awesome cabinets and flat packs. They are precision and go together perfectly each and every time. I could not recommend his services more highly, Tom does great work. And to give you an idea you can see some pics of the other flat pack to see the great work Tom does.

Do you have a link to the original project? I can't find it through the search. What driver are you using and what is the expected f3/10?

IIRC, the original design called for the Yung SD200 (no boost), and even that amp was enough to drive the PR to overexcursion...

Have you had any excursion issues using the Bash amp?

I had PMed Johnny on this and he thought the Bash amp was a good choice along with the infinity driver which he had as a choice.

I have not had the amp over the half way mark or it will over drive the PR. But having the extra headroom really works for me.

So far it rattles stuff right off the wall. I am going to have to figure out what I am going to do with my OS MTM's as they will walk right off the top, as my idea was the put rubber feet on my OS MTM's and place them on top of the subs. Kind of the tarkus idea, but if the movie gets going the OS MTM's will walk right off the top of the cabinet.

I only have the one built so far. I have a second flat pack that I will put together at a later date. Once I do that I will have to pay friendship dues to my neighbors to keep the peace!

I would have to say I am very happy with the way this sub sounds. 20Hz is lower then I can hear, but when I ran 20Hz sine wave through it, it raddled stuff off the wall. It was really something to behold. I have a second cabinet built now and when I have the money for the parts I will have two of these puppies cranking out bass.

Thanks again to Tom Jones for creating such great flat packs!

I wish I could take more credit for this design, but the original concept belongs to "jsr". My application of the older model of Infinity Reference was actually as a small, sealed with boost application.

                      Re: Digger 8 build

Sorry for the hiatus. I've had lots of personal things going on along with work being very busy, so I've not been able to frequent the boards much (if any).

First off, DANG GREAT JOB KEVIN!!! I need you to re-make mine for me! Yours look SOOO much better than mine, which is still unfinished in bare MDF. And I too have to give Tom Jones props. The BEST work I've seen thus far. My Digger8 cab was actually made by another member and I never even got all the parts from that order (he stopped answering my emails, so there goes the money). My cabs from Tom for my Madison design are great and fit together so well.

I'm very happy you like the performance Kevin.

Regarding how much power is needed, the modeling shows the PR hits Xmax at 200W. I'm not sure what the Xlimit is on the PR, but I've not found a movie passage yet that made the PR distort from hitting an excursion limit. And I'm running the Yung SD-300 no-boost amp. I wanted a compact design that was able to hit low without any electronic aids such as boost or servo feedback as I wanted something low cost as well. I feel the Bash 300 is the better amp relative to the Yung, but I got the Yung low priced at the time.
If you're really concerned about PR excursion, there's an AE PR that will work perfectly and even comes with about the correct weight on the PR cone already.

Oh, last thing...I used the JBL 8" sub, but I modeled both the JBL and Infinity subs and modeling showed they performed almost identically. The only difference is the Infinity has 1.5mm more Xmax. I've owned both the JBL and Infinity subs and can say from experience that their performance is indeed almost identical and one could easily be swapped for the other. The Infinity has a bit more cone mass to allow for a slight (~1Hz) lower extension, but my ears are not good enough to hear 1Hz difference. Seeing Kevin's build with the nice Infinity silver cone makes me want to take back my Infinity sub I sold to my friend and put it in my Digger8.

Thanks again Kevin for sharing your build.

The PR is 12". So far I have not had any problem other then the OS MTM walking off during a big LFE scene in a movie. The sub shakes the apartment to the foundations, and I cannot fathom what it will be like when I buy the parts for the second one and have it online. I am stupefied by the power and authority of this small unassuming little sub.

I have been thinking about some time way down the road of building the Zaph MTM's and move the OS stuff my my bedroom. The we would have silver cones everywhere. I think if nothing else it would make for some serious eye candy.

I was looking at the AE site and I don't see a 12" PR listed. Can you post a link to the the PR you are talking about. Because a 15" would require a new box since it is only 14" wide.
